Another bee shot from the archives. Taken at about 3X with the Canon MP-E65 macro lens and a ring flash. The cluster of three simple eyes partially seen on top of the head are ocelli. They focus through a single lens, unlike the large compound eyes, and are used for sun orientation and navigation. Also interesting are the fine guard hairs that cover the compound eyes, that disappear when seen straight on.
