a sad story: a while back we noticed that a female robin had eyed the porch overhang for a nest, which she built in one afternoon... she was soon sitting on her eggs, and not too long after that there were at least three babies in the nest... she was kept busy bringing them bugs and worms, but she couldn't tolerate our presence even if we were thirty or so feet away... we took to using the back door so as not to freak her out so much... then, a couple of days ago, all of them simply disappeared, I mean they were gone, no mama and no babies in the nest, not even any eggshells, in fact the nest was the only thing left... the babies were much too young to have fledged and left the nest. (I managed to get this shot from my car window where she couldn't see me. I had shots of the babies but didn't have the heart to post them.)
