in the provincelands at the tip of cape cod there is a vast area of sand dunes, part of the national seashore, which was created by the first english settlers back in the 1600's... The area was forested at that time, but all the trees were cut and harvested for use as buildings and fuel, and the cattle, sheep and horses overgrazed the land... what used to be a foot of topsoil blew away leaving only sand... which began to migrate toward downtown provincetown... reforesting began in the 19th century, to save the town, and it's still going on today. one of the reclamation areas is a large stand of beech trees in the middle of the provincelands, a beautiful place to hike or bicycle through... a road runs through it and also plenty of bike trails... and I'd highly recommend it as a place to visit if you ever come to cape cod... ;-)
