The Bannack jail was built of 8-10inch logs. But jails were seldom used because offenders were either warned , told to get out of town, or hung. And no one wanted the job of guarding prisoners. It would take the people away from working their gold claims. Inside the jail there are still metal rings with chains where prisoners would be 'hooked up.'Henry Plummer became sheriff in 1863, he was a vigilante with quite a past! He had the jail built. And even tho he was an outlaw, he never spent time in that jail either, instead he was eventually taken directly to the gallows and hung!(someday I hope to do a website all about those gold panning days at Bannack)
