Stanage edge is a 4 mile stretch of gritstone forming part of a steep escarpment along the east side of Derwent valley. Below these edges are piles of millstones and grindstones abandoned in the nineteenth century following the introduction of cheaper imports. They would originally have been destined for corn mills and blade works.
