Using the Shadow/Highlight Adjustment .. by John Ruttenberg @ Digital Grin

QUOTE ... Here is something I've learned from beta reading Dan Margulis' Professional Photoshop, 5th edition (due for publication in the fall of 2006). Consider it a teaser.

... step out of the shadows and highlight your observations .. ;o)

I’ve used the shadow and highlight tools quite effectively before but I also discovered quite quickly that, like every other filter, its very easy to overcook it and ruin the result so the less is more theory definitely applies here.

From the DSL-Reports thread (where I got this)

quote .. Can be a very powerful and useful tool. But if not used properly it will ruin an image quicker then it will help it!! Kinda like curves. Truthfully, one is better off learning curves. Curves are the most powerful tool in PS, especially when used with layers and masks. Honestly, curves should be the first thing people master in Adobe PS of any version!! .. (MacroMan)

I'd agree with that entirely - layer masks and adjustment layers are about the best tools you'll get for improving an image naturally.

Found this thread inadvertently through another discussion forum search, and I was looking for some more information on this tool/functionality.

Quite a good good and informative tutorial. Belated thanks to KEIFER. :o)

I do not yet have PS but the Aperture tools for this type of adjustment I use quite regularly. The step-by-step tutorial link is a great resource though.
