I'm a novice to the website and have no clue as to how to vote on a picture that I look at individually. Please, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually due to various reasons you can't choose individual images to vote on. (It's a long story... but basically in place to prevent vote cheating, favourtism etc.). The only way to vote is to go to the voting booth where you will be served random images in need of a vote. These images are first chosen from the new images and then goes to older images on the site.

So to summarize:
* You can't selectively vote on images.
* You can only vote in the voting booth.
* Voting shows random images.
* You need to view the full image to be able to cast a vote.
* If you want to post a comment on an image you voted on, you can do so by clicking on the thumb nail of the image, after you have voted on it.

Now if you are interested on deciding on what rating to give, you might find the voting guide useful.

most of us have received notice of our friends' photographs and have looked at them and. i don't know about anyone else but it is very obvious to me whose photos are whose. consequently, it is difficult to be objective when they appear in the voting booth. i'd like them to go through voting before we know who took what and before they are presented to the group. i guess the answer is to get rid of the friends list.

You could always change it so that your friends don't appear in the voting booth :-P

Being objective means distancing yourself from any connections with the image, even if you have already seen the image and know who the creator is. All you need to do is take a look at the image as if it's the very first time that you are seeing it. Judge it according to the criteria and then vote, without even thinking about who the author is or what they will think about your vote.

If the image is average, give it an average rating. If it sucks, it sucks and vote accordingly. Your friends will be much happier with an honest vote as oppossed to one meant not to hurt their feelings.
