Ah thanks, it looks nice. That new 50mm 1.2L is very attractive too.

very nice - all of which makes me curious as to how that leaves the 30D in the product line position, apart from not a very attractive proposition anymore. Will also be a worry to Nikon and Sony with there flawed 10MP sensor products…

Warehouse Express in the UK have it available for order for September 6th delivery with a list price £60 less than the Nikon D80.....

The 400D will probably overshadow everything else but Canon launched a raft of new products at the same time including 10MP compact cameras and a whole range of new pixima and selphy printers as well as higher resolution consumer scanners.

The 50mm 1.2L at $1,599
And the 70mm-200mm F:4L at $1,249

forget the kit lens - get the $799 body and a better lens to go with it :-)

Agreed unless you don’t have a better lens. Then the kit lens becomes bargain capable of very decent results.

or...buy it with the kit lens so you dont bankrupt yourself, and save up for a lens upgrade, and still be the first kid on the block to own one

I was in my local equipment rental office today picking up some gear for a job at the weekend and a Canon tekkie was there talking to the owner who is a former colleague apparently. He was on his was to Photokina but had stopped by to show his friend some of the new gear he was taking with him, including the 400D (which was very nice).

He was quite affable and happy to discuss the new products as well as being suitably coy about future developments. I asked him where the 30D sat in the big picture now the 400D was here. He replied that Canon viewed the 30D as an interim model – there to extend the 20D’s lifespan until an all new model is launched, implying that will be sooner rather than later so don’t expect the 30D to last any longer than Canon’s minimum product lifespan which is currently 18 months. I asked if the 30D replacement would get a hand me down from the 5D as the product line is updated but he said definitely not, instead the model will follow the pattern that the 350 and 20D had of similar spec but with better body and extra features. The 5D and its successor would stay pretty much in the same bracket but when I asked about the 1 series, that’s when things went very vague and cloak & dagger. He just said that the current sensor was at the limit of its capabilities with what the glass could handle.

With that he started packing up to leave and I noticed a lens I didn’t recognise that he was bagging up and asked him if it was one of the new models launched yesterday, “no” he replied with a wry smile, “that would be one of our new digital medium format lenses….” and promptly left :-)

Yeh I was going to buy a 30D but after seeing the spects on the 400d. I may just change my mind. The only thing is the multi capture rate , still a little slow.

I was trying to find out if the new 400d cmos sensor has the 1.6 crop factor? This is all I could find so far.---------

"Newly developed by Canon, this large CMOS sensor is at the top of its class with 10.1 million effective pixels. A wide ISO speed range and low noise are realized through innovations like redesigned microlenses and enhanced output amp performance. On-chip noise reduction automatically engages when noise is detected (“Auto”), and can be engaged for exposures of 1 sec. or longer (“On”). Also designed for the EOS 400D DIGITAL are new automatic cleaning functions that reduce dust throughout the sensor unit to assure image clarity."

If it has the 1.6 crop factor like my 300d then I would rethink buying it IMHOP.

What is the big deal with a crop ratio? I have never quite figured out why people don't like it. It seems to me that it is something that since film was this size then for a digital sensor to be any good it must be that same size. From what i have understood alot of lenses don't look super great on the edges anyways, so is it really bad to lose that little bit?

For teles no , it is a good thing , But for wide angle you lose a lot (in a conventional lens ex; 14-18 mm ; Not 10-12 mm )

it has a 22.2mm x 14.8mm CMOS sensor with built-in low-pass filter
and a 3:2 aspect ratio.
