dslr shutter movement..

i have an old praktica 35mm, and love it, i recently bought a new hama tripod, adn ive noticed that, due to the construction of my camera(screw thread for tripod not flush to body)and the weight of the lenses(big old metal ones) that the whole set up is not the most stable, and very sensitive to movement. due to it being an old camera, it has a very clunky mechanical movement of the shutter, and with my larger lenses, and even a wire remote control, im getting movement.
the point of that little story is, im asking everyone who uses a dslr, if there is much movement with the shutter, or is it much more advanced and all electrical and smooth?
any comments will help in my decision of which dslr to buy..
thanks
gareth

Hi Gareth, Ive not seen your tripod yet but if it has a hook on the underside you can hang a heavy bag from it too add some stability. Ive not noticed any movement with my d50 but ive not really tried long exposures.

I believe the answer to your question is no. With a modern digital SLR you will only get blur due to movement or camera shake if your camera is on an unstable surface or if you touch it while the shutter is open. He action of the shutter opening or closing will not cause movement in the camera body. Personally I have foudn that as long as you use the timer or a remote you won't get any blur due to movement. I use a Nikon D70 myself but I imagine it would be the same for any new SLR.

remember though with long lenses - even on DSLR's - you may get a better balance mounting the lens on the tripod depending on the weight distribution, failing that you can get counter balance rods for your lens on the tripod. modern lenses and cameras with built in image stabilisation and auto focus can also cause shake albeit slight on a tripod so disable the image stabilisation if you are shooting on the tripod - they arent needed and you'll save battery life too.

Actually you get motion blur (or a loss in sharpness ) from the mirror .
Thats why it is advisable to use miror lock when using long eposures ( or macro shots where the effect is more pronounced )
That is atleast my experience ( with a 20 d )
Also here you can find froof ( the text is Dutch but the pictures speak for themselves )

I too have not noticed much of a problem with my D70, but have read stuff about people talking about it. I'm not a huge believer that it makes that much of a diffence so personally i don't worry about it, but as kodo says canon does have a mirror lock up function on most of their cameras that allow you to flip the mirror wait a second for the vibrations to die and then open the shutter. Apparently that helps some.

If you can afford the 30d go for it. From what i have seen of the rebel it is much stupider when it comes to trying to focus with its kit lens compared to the 30D with its kit lens(which gets really annoying). Also it is small in your hand and doesn't feel as nice.

But of course don't forget to look at nikon either. The upcoming D80 looks like it is going to be very nice, as is the D70, which i have and love.

PhotoKina is on next week in Germany when all the big camera manufacturers will showcase all their upcoming gear for 2007, as has been reported before - the 30D is strictly an interim model to extend the 20D's life so expect that to be upgraded not long into it's lifespan with the new features from the 400D. If it's priced right, the Fuji S4/S5 Pro will also be worth a look and is based on the new Nikon bodies and uses Nikon lenses and accessories.

I have the Canon DSLR Rebel <300D> model and really find it to work just great for most situations. Never noticed any motion blur from the shutter <mirror> movement.

Same with my 350d, even on the closest macros (about 30cm away with a 300mm lens) there is very little camera shake (using remote release and self timer) mirror lockup barely makes a noticeable difference, but being a perfectionist i use it anyway, btw 400d looks very good apart from the lack of a small display

The mirror on any slr camera will contribute a tiny bit of movement but not half as much movement that a poorly constructed tripod will. The first tripod I bought is still like new because it’s useless so it never gets used.

i bought a hama star 61 tripod, just for beginners work, and its a bit plastic in construction, so when i get my dslr, ill buy a nice well made pod.

phil's not kidding
i bought a manfrotto 055 PRO B with a manganese head and also a quick pistol grip thingie cost more than £200 but I dont regret it not one little bit !

its solid as an ox!

its an expensive buy but youll never need to buy another EVER
unless of course you want a second one ;)

the rationale is that by the time youve spent £3k on great cam and set of lenses + flash etc youre not going to do the set up any justice plopping it on a damn velbon piece of pooh

imho your purchasing emphasis should be
best glass (lenses)
best sensor (camera)
best tropod to hold the whole thing steady
in that order

there are plenty of different weights and prices to choose from in the manfrotto range
and then also look at gitz + one or two other _pro_ tripods

oh and prepare for your sharp intake of breath when you see some of the prices !

:)

cheers mate, although, i wont be spending that amount of money on cameras and tripods just yet, its only a serious hobby at the mo, not quite taken over my life yet.....
the cheap one i got will do for now, and when i get a better one itll do just fine for my handycam, as theres no weight issues there.
thanks

Don't forget Olympus!

... Just my 2 cents... they're a great value and a good camera to fall in love with, way underrated IMHO.

If I didn’t already have a collection of canon lenses I would be looking very seriously at the Olympus cameras, they seem to have great colour output.

Oops, didn’t mean to confuse you :-)

Don’t rush though, you seem to have plenty of time to make your mind up. The bottom line is, play with them all and make sure you look at results from those that interest you then make a decision.

its been really helpful so far.

For me, I usually discount the Olympus as a viable choice because of its proprietary lens system – at least with a Nikon, Canon etc you have access to a range of third party lenses such as Tamron, Sigma etc that occasionally offer better lenses than the manufacturers models at a fraction of the price.
