cynlee has trouble surfin' Caedes

I received the below message from Cindy AKA ::cynlee

She seems to be havin’ PC / Internet problems and requested some help from an Aediles, Praetor, Consul or the Man himself…

::cynlee’s message…

“Randy, I can't get around Caedes web site. I have contacted my cable company and Dell support and they say I have no problem on my end, that they can access the web site just fine. I can get to the site, even open a thumbnail, but there is no larger image on the page, only comments. I can't log in because it takes all day and I'm left with a "Can't access that page" message because it takes so long. I can't even leave a discussion board question. I can surf the web just fine to any other site. I checked the URL for accuracy under the FAQs suggestion and that is fine.

Short of writing to you, I have no idea how to contact Caedes to report this problem. Can you possibly leave a message on discussion board for me? This is so frustrating. I would appreciate any suggestion you might have or any help you might find. I was able to access the entire site at 3 a.m., but not any more. Thanks a bunch.

Cindy (Cynlee)

P.S. I'm going to work and will try to access from there also.”

Thanks to all for any help you may provide!! I’ll let Cindy know that we've got our top people on the job.

i seem to remember reading a few other posts regarding this...have her do a "disk cleanup" it's found in [Start>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup] that should help, as should clearing her browsing history. Lastly, have her do a "disk de-fragment" that'll be found in the same menu as 'disk cleanup'

If you use Firefox, go to Tools --> Clear Private Data --> Check everybox...except for saved passwords.

Other than that, i dont know. :(

Hey, everyone, I'm writing to you from work. I did a disk cleanup earlier today to no avail. I will try a defrag, but I called home around 8 p.m. and my husband went onto Caedes for me with no problem at all. I personally think there was something wrong with Charter cable service and though the tech told me there wasn't any problem on their end, he was talking to me from Lexington, KY and I live in MA. He tried to get me to increase my connection speed to 5M for another $4 a month, but didn't solve my problem. I can't imagine it was IE that was the problem because I have Netscape as a back up and I couldn't access Caedes web site from it at all. Terri (madmaven) suggested I try Foxfire as a better browser and I am definitely going to be checking that out. Thanks, Terri.
Thank you Randy for such a quick response to and help with my dilemma. I was really getting very frustrated and annoyed that I could not see any images or leave comments for a whole day. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful suggestions and I have to say when someone puts out the call, you're all right there with the ideas and the helping hand. Always very much appreciated by me. Thanks again. Cindy (cynlee)

Cindy, the same thing happened to me awhile back, and Caedes the man himself told me to switch to Firefox, since then I have had no problem.

I am using firefox and the site has never worked perfectly for me, but it has got much worse today for some reason. It was fine yesterday. Normally, I can see all the images as long as I use Hyper mode and browse the regular gallaries. (I can never see thumbnails in Normal mode or when browsing the galleries of particular contributors.) Now I can not only see no thumbnails at all, but I cannot see the images on the comments pages for each image. The only way to view an image is to view it full size.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I'm using the latest stable version of Firefox (same as yesterday with no config/extension changes) on Mac OS X 10.4.8 (same as yesterday with no config changes).

Thanks,

Thanks for the rapid responses.

Samatar, I did check the FAQ before posting here, but did not find a solution. I can't guarantee I didn't miss something, but I did go through the section on not being able to view images. The only possible problem I found was that clicking on the link to test the http referer header returned a blank. However, it does say it is OK if the headers are being deleted (though I can't think why they would be and security tests online never have any problem figuring out my ip address, browser, os etc.

Keifer, yes, I have a firewall running. It is the one which comes with OS X. I'm using the default settings except that it is on rather than off and have used these settings for as long as I can remember the firewall being configurable through the GUI.

Piner, no. I'll give that a whirl since if it is a firewall problem, say, I should have the same problem. (Though it won't really narrow it down to that, of course.) If it is a browser problem, though, Safari might work and then I'd know it was Firefox related.

I wondered if anything had changed since it just suddenly stopped working for me, but I'm by no means claiming it has - or, rather, if it has it could well be self-re-configuration on the part of my computer...

Will report back in a bit.

OK, so I can see the thumbnails etc. in Safari. I think that rules out a firewall problem, for example. I forgot to mention that I have cleared Firefox's history, cache and, for good measure, downloads (but not cookies or passwords). Can anybody think of anything else I could try? I really don't like Safari, so I'd like to get it working with Firefox again if possible.

well ... assuming that Firefox on OSX is the same as WinXP .. how about the

[x] load images ... on the content tab of the options screen

and .. sometimes a firewall's "block advertisements" could block the thumbs as though they were adverts ... and, (just guessing), the way your firewall affects one browser might be different than another browser

(I have no idea what the "default" settings are on your OS)

if'n ya did that .. "block images from xxxxx" .. (an easy mistake via right click menu)

do this .....

in Firefox options .. Content Tab .. across from [x] load images .. click "exceptions" .. and zap any offending caedes related addresses

I would recommend zapping all of them. The thumbnails are linked with just the IP address of the image server (meaning that it probably won't say caedes.net in the server name).

I found a solution, which I'll post here in case someone needs it. I don't understand why I *suddenly* needed to do this, but maybe something else changed. Adding 66.98.212.171 to the lists of sites allowed to load images from other sites (as well as www.caedes.net) seems to have solved the problem. It doesn't explain why it worked without my doing this before. My default settings are to allow images from all sites, but only from the originating site. I then have a list of exceptions which are allowed to load images full stop. What doesn't make any sense to me is that this worked fine until a couple of days ago.

Oh well. Thanks for the help. OS X's default firewall settings allow everything http like through in response to user initiated requests. I use other software to control web stuff etc. that I don't want. The firewall can be used in more sophisticated ways, but only from the command line.

well .. for example .. "block images from xxxxx" is right next to "set as desktop background" on the right-click menu of firefox when pointing at an image ... so it is easy to slip ... if you drink too much coffee

I am wondering how\where the 66.98.212.171 number came to your attention

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. It turns out that it was the option in firefox which prevents loading of images from "other websites". I was linking to the caedes.net image server with just the IP address, so it didn't know that it was still a caedes.net server. By changing it to use the name of the image server "images.caedes.net" or "i2.caedes.net" I was able to convince firefox that it was still a caedes.net affiliate website. It apparently only cares about the top-level domain name. This should fix the issue for everyone now, no special exceptions are needed.

Keifer, I got the 66.98.212.171 number by asking Adblock for a list of all blockable images on the site. It does this so you can choose which ones to block, but I used it just to see details of the images I couldn't see. I then realised the images weren't (apparently) on caedes.net, so I knew I needed to make an exception in Firefox's preferences.

.MellodySmiles, it would probably help if you could give us a few more details. What operating system are you using and what version (e.g. Windows XP, Mac OS X 10.3.8 or whatever)? And what browser are you using? If you have more than one browser, can you see images in one of them or neither?
