Rate Yourself as a Commentator

::DigiCamMan
10/01/06 8:10 PM GMT
Rate yourself based on the following criteria on your comments to others.

1. I am upfront, honest and tell it like it is no matter what others say or think.

2. I am a hardcore schmoozer that would say anything to maintain a good self image.

3. I want to score big points for that top commentator spot and will say anything to get it.

4. I don't comment because I can't type worth a pooty.

5. The words never come out the way I type them.

6. I could care less.

You may explain your answer....if you dare.

wow....that's tough......I am not sure where I fall into.....
I TRY hard to just find something positive to say....even if I may not like a pic in general....and NOT for my own self image...but to be positive and encourage another's work.
What makes me an expert, after all....? MANY of my works SUCK......

PS: I do find it hard to out-n-out lie....but it's not so tough to find SOMETHING in almost everything that is positive....

I was asked to comment { a few days ago} on an image...and attempted to be nice...and offer suggestions, critique's and even did a make-over of the image...cloned out a coupla vehicles...and sent a pm to the person...explaining what program I used and how I did it. This person has NEVER responded and I assume I have only offended them.....

I choose ... number 7. ;o)

In all honesty, I usually follow what is reiterated in the How to Give a good review found under "Other Stuff."

Plus ...

I think the one addition that could be made to flesh out those guidelines, is prior to putting your comments down on an image ... take a look at the person's profile page, to gauge your intended audience for age and experience in their selected field of artistry ... and peruse their gallery for a moment to get a 'feel' for their particular artistic take.

That would sum it up for moi. Oh, one more thing ... 'les's is not always more in some cases ... well, for me it isn't. I have received more replies from my lengthy and at times wordy commentaries than the passive ones that are limited to phrases like; "ZOMG ... this is awesome!!" (I am sooo sooo kidding and poking Andrew atm ... hey! he poked me first! :oP)

I'm not sure where I would fall number-wise, as I tend to be sporatic in when I comment on people's images.

I try my best to point out what is good about an image, and I try to leave at least one suggestion with the artist, even if it is only to provide a higher resolution image...

the closest i come to any of the above is #1, but there s a such thing as telling the the truth for motives other than honesty. I'd never come out and say something stinks, but i wont say i like something if i dont. another thing, sometimes it's tough to point out a flaw, regardless of how obvious, when your comment is the fifteenth, and the first fourteen commentors practically fell over themselves praising an image. the choice then becomes one of...'do i become the lone troll who isnt being nice?' or 'well if all the others arent saying that the horizon is leaning harder than a drunken sailor, who am i to say so?"
stuff like that makes it a bit uncomfortable at times...

If I may interject some of my own experience on that note Rob ...

I have been the dissenting opinion at times ... and have for the most part, had those comments graciously received . It may explain, why at times ... I tend to be a little 'wordy.' In those instances I feel it's much more important to take into account, that without the benefit of intonation and inflection of voice ... it's important to try ... try and be understood.

We are reasonably intelligent human beings after all ... well, ok except that guy ... being forthright and gentle in your remarks usually works out fine. If not, throw a hissy fit and spam them with PM's ... that works equally as well in some cases. (JOKe)

Lol.

Whaaa?? You don't believe me ... *adopts his killer innocent puppy dog look* ... no, I don't have anything in my eye, what are you on about?

'Most' being the operative word, and that is good enough for me. I too, use a Gaussian Bell Curve in determining the statistical spread and expected distribution of reactions. :oP

I saw that coming. I am somewhat a mongrel. I am guilty of #1...4...and 5. I get real close to #2 at times but try to adopt Terri's view of finding something positive to comment about but do push the lines of a schmooze on hopefully rare occasions. *hangs head in shame* Many times I have not been critical and felt I should have been cuz sometimes people just need it for their own good...a growth thing. I try not to offend anyone. If one is offended then they misread me. The end.

This appears to be more a self categorization than a self rating.

I've probably been guilty of all five at some point during my stay here. Although I like to think myself a 1 most of the time, 5 happens a lot. That's why I use a word processor before I ever hit the "Post this Comment" button. I'm so neurotic about that now, especially in the face of grammar queens. I guess that makes me guilty of number 2 as well. Sometimes I am a 6 because of the "Comment Request" system that bugs me every couple of days. The moral of the story is to write honestly and run it through a word processor so you don't misspell the word "a lot"

'A lot' is two words...a...and...lot. I think if you set your camera to ISO 200 this will stop.

Hey! Maybe we should develop a kind of, sort of, C-Index for commentators?

Ok ... what's with the shotgun being pointed in my direction? ...
... it was just an idea, a thoug**BOOM**

This posting author wishes to retract his suggestion. :o

I was fully aware that a lot is two words (although technically one word as it is a compound word representing a singular idea, but this is not time to split hairs.) Unfortunately the word processors don't do to goodly with grammar.

I think the current system we have for rating commentators is quite sufficient. Karma is a good indicator of a worthwhile opinion (or a psychotic spammer or word game junkie). Negative karma is indicative of a very bad commenter and good karma an indicator of a Caedes frequenter. Though, I think a nifty addition would be to have the ability to directly affect the karma by a "this post was helpful" or "bury this post" option for artists on reviewers. This might be subject to abuse by anyone who dislikes criticism on their work. OK, I'm done.
