Unsharp Mask Recommendations @ dsl-reports

a couple insights to Scott Kelby's new book on Digital Photography

and .. the praise just rolls in ..

QUOTE .. I have tried these settings using The Gimp and the results aren't bad.

it just doesn't get any better than that in the dog-eat-dog world of digital photography

Unsharp Mask Recommendations = Dont use it. Use Smart Sharpen instead. it's much less clumsy and doesnt rely on framing your pixels with black and white borders.

The principle of using high percentages vs. small pixel radius has always been the norm in USM - usually using a value less than one - say 0.5 works best with percentile values between one and two hundred percent.

Based on your "Don't use it" comment, I don't believe so as I still use it lol. Smart sharpen? What version is that?

smart sharpen has been around for a while although it's only since it's reworking in v.CS2 that it has become an indespensible tool.

That's what I figured...when they figure out how to incorporate it into 7 for free as they should, I will start using it. Or when you send me a copy lol

Photoshop Elements 5 incorporates a 'reduced' version of smart sharpen in the Adjust Sharpen feature but it's more or less the same thing so get your hand in your (collective) pockets.
