I cannot for the life of me, figure out what my math teachers are asking of me when they give me this problem. I havent the slightest clue how to figure this out. I was hoping that one of ya'll here would be a math wiz and help me out some.

Here is the problem, just show me how to get the answer PLEASE!!

If If angle a=2 angle x and angle b=2 angel y, what must be added to the hypothesis so that we may correctly dedue angle a = angle b???

I have no idea how to figure this out. Its not in my math book and Im stuck here. Help please.

and no, you wouldnt be helping me cheat.

I confess… I'm a math whiz… and I'm LOST… are you missing some parameters? is there a visual that we're not seeing? or are you merely missing perhaps a comma or 2?

This is how it is, exactly word for word:

If angle a=2 angle x and angle b=2 angle y, what must be added to the hypothesis so that we may correctly deduce angle a= angle b

I have been staring at this problem for over an hour. If This is only the begginning of my Geometry, Im scared of the next 3 quarters...

Uhm ... scratches head ...

Assuming you meant a = 2 X angle x ... b = 2 X angle y

x and y must be both equal as well. *shrugs*

Or ... define the set of numbers for each x and y so that the preceeding statements are true.

Think that is right ... perhaps you overcomplicated the question? What was the general area of study? For some context here.

Algebra? Geometry? Parallel theory?

Uhm ... pretty sure it's not how to lose ones' mind in three easy math steps. Could be wrong on that one though ... happened to me alot. ;o)

something like all the angels exqual two, so therefore somehow angle a = angle b...which is two..

I'm not too good on maths...but thats what i can figure out....0.o

Les- I am in Geometry. And only the first quarter...I fear the next three..
And its written word for word just like the teacher gave me...Im wondering if she didnt write it wrong or something. cause I cannot figure it out...

Well can't you jsut explain that you think they wrote it wrong?

if not ask her to tell you?

that's what shes there for, to teach...not to shout when you cant do something.

Ok Cat ... take a deep breath ... punch a pillow ... have a cookie ... or two.

Is it as simple as I mentioned, and that was this:

x and y must be both equal as well.

The hypothesis then would have to be true. Defining the kind of, or type of numbers x and y are probably has no bearing. You know integers, natural ... blah, blah, blah.

And I am confident now that ... as written ... "a=2 angle x" ... means ... a is equal to two times angle x.

Same goes for the other. :o)

To be clear ... you have to add:

x and y must be both equal as well.

And I think that's pretty much it. You're at the introduction to ... and I think you are overthinking this one. :o)

I over think everything. With math, I hate having to prove how i got the answer,(or how the answer was gotten) So I tend to think that nothing is as simple as it looks. I had gotten the answer you gave to first time i looked at the problem, but thought, "it cannot be that simple..theres got to be more"

But thank you for all the help. I really appreciate it Les, maybe i really will pass this class.

Ok ... getting there ...

Simple algebra this time, eliminating the word "angle":

If: a = 2x and b = 2y
What would have to be added to make a = b?

Same thing as I stated ... x must equal y. Period. Right? OK, then ...

Adding in the word "angle" ... I don't think changes anything and the answer is the same ... x must equal y.

What I do some times as a proof ... is simply substitute some numbers in ... like "1" and then do the math. If it holds true ... then you are right. That is why I mentioned defining the set of, or the numbers for x and y. Real, natural, integers and so on.

Yes, methinks you overthink too much ... er ... I think. :oP

Now ... reward yourself and have a cookie. Eat it ... eat the cookie.

*watches to make sure Cat eats the cookie* C'mon now ... I am watching ...

*peers through monitor*

Good. Now ... can I have a cookie too? *smiles innocently*

Alright so...My first impression was right? Theres nothing to do to the problem. It is true unto its self.

x and y are the same thing, thus making a and b equal... right?

Well ...

In the original wording, there is no statement that angle x and angle y must be equal ... that's the part you have to add to make the hypothesis true.

What you just wrote above in the preceding post is not stated.

"x and y are not the same thing" ... unless you say so and make that assertion ... and then, it becomes true.

Done and done.

*checks* *double checks* *triple checks*

yes… if you assume that the second x is a multiplier and not an integer, Les is 100% correct.
