I assume you have win 2k or xp...
Windows will automatically put the same file on both if you use "center" or "stretch". If you make the image double the width of one monitor, (ie, 3200x1200 if both are 1600x1200) and select "tile", it should span both displays. You'll need to use an image editing program to change the size of the image.
Some drivers have certain settings in the display properties (Nvidia calls in Nview) to do it if both displays are running on the same card, though I haven't used them.

Why use 2 monitors? I dunno, maybe it's a complex. But it is nice to have programs like AIM, winamp, etc. visible off to the side, or, more practically, the photoshop tools out of the way, giving a bigger working area. It will also remove any need of a heater in the wintertime, because 2 CRT's throw a crapload of heat. :)

With WinXP there is a built in tool to configure your desktop for 2 monitors. I think it would be cool to have dual monitors, and if I was rich enough I would have 3 monitors =)

About heating a room, in this room in our house that has our 2 computers, with a CRT, and an LCD it is always warm, bad in summer but great in winter. In winter it is always the warmest room =)

Now I have to seriously consider getting dual monitors.. Except for the excessive heat, I think it would be quite neat to use such technology!

Well when you "find" a decent CRT in your dorm hallway, and have a used-computer store nearby to get a $20 pci videocard to drive the 2nd one, it becomes amazingly affordable... :)

Hooray for finding monitors in dorm hallways! So far I have a 17" and a 21" from just that. Unfortunately, the 21" doesn't work at the moment. :)

That stinks, so how are you heating your room now that you don't have it working? =P Also, I wish I could "find" monitors laying around =(
