Layer Modes

I'm trying to expand my knowledge of photoshop, and one of the things I've been playing with is the layer modes. I can obviously see what each one does, but I don't understand why, for examply, overlay mode has a different effect compared with say, lighten. If I knew what each mode was trying to accomplish, I think I could better use that feature. Does anyone out there know, or can give me the link to an article which explains it? Thanks :)

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb. - Churchill
