I really need help again you guys. For those of you who remember my last help thread...yea, math is not my strong point. Can ya'll help me figure out this question?

"Prove that if the supplement of an angle exceeds three times its compliment of the angle by 2n degrees, then the angle contains 45+n degrees.”

I hate this problem. I’ve been at it for over a week now and still can’t get the answer. My teachers said that the supplement was 180 degrees, and the complement was 90 degrees... Neither my mom, dad nor I have any clue how to figure this. So please, a bit of help from the math whiz's here?

Oh my...

Haven't got a clue. My brain has been turned off all day, and my math teacher probably wouldn't know how to do this himself.

Have you got a diagram to go with the question? because that would help greatly and i'm sure i could help you... if only you had a diagram.

I'm fairly sure the angle is 90 degrees and n is 45

Ok, here are the definitions from my teachers:

Supplementary angles are two angles whose sum is equal to a straight angle or 180°. Each of the two angles is called the supplement of the other.

Complementary angles are two angles whose sum is equal to a right angle or 90°. Each angle is called the complement of the other.

the question doesn't really make sense... well not to me at least, i'm in the smart class but i'm not a know it all genius so i won't be much help, i'll just provide comical relief every now and then :P

I have to say… you get questions that read more like Cryptic Clues than math problems. I'll get back to you later after my brain has refreshed. lol

I just worked the problem, and although the directions are a bit confusing, it does turn out to be true. You first need to convert the problem into a drawing with the five important angles clearly labeled (180 degrees, 90 degrees, phi, theta, omega). Then use the problem to write our three different relations between the various angles in your drawing. You will have a system of three equations with four unknowns, so you final answer will depend on the value of 'n'.

I always had to hire a tutor for math. I took logic and critical thinking instead of math because I have to talk out problems and not do periods, carrying, conversions etc. I am a beleiver in calculators and find it even hard to know what buttons to push to get the answer. I preferred P.E.

I believe the correct answer would be "I'm going to be (insert career that has nothing to do with trigonometry or whatever we were discussing here) so it doesn't matter".

Amen to THAT answer!!!
Which is precisely why I majored in Journalism and not Rocket Science...I get a question like that, and my brain will explode.
