We were close to running out of disk space on the server, so I made the decision to remove all small versions of images which were archived. This means that an archived image will only be available at the maximum resolution.
Soon we will have a way to generate the smaller image version on demand, so this is only a temporary measure.
just for grins and giggles ... how much space will be gained by doing this "first step" ... and then again when \ if .. you choose to have all image requests generated on the spot?
and .. would it save CPU cycles to pass the "full-size" image out without any pixel hocus-pocus?
We gained about 30 gigs with this. The total that we could save once all image sizes are generated on demand is dependant on how large the cache is (once a given image is resized we will store it for a while just in case someone else wants it).

Once the on-demand system is running, I'll be able to freely tune the system between using either disk or CPU resources for the images. It would be difficult to guess which would run out first.
Why don't you just limit one pic every 24 hrs. for paying members and one every 48 hrs. for non paying members? Maybe this would spur more to become paying members and you can add hard drives etc.

Funny thing...I always imagine this fancy Caedes office with all these servers churning away...but then I think it just may be a server sitting in the bathroom because it's somewhat dust free and choking on all these pics it has to devour every day.

Many of my friends are Brits and my heritage comes from there...but that's no excuse...kick them out! I kid...I don't want to start another Revolutionary War.

I enjoy a Killians once in a while, because most beers are too watered down for my taste and Guinness is too syrupy, but my favorite beer is Blackened Voodoo Lager.
Figs, beer ??
And I came over here for a bit of intelligent conversation which did not include figs :)
Best beer is Monteiths, made here in NZ. Summer Ale :) And today is a perfect summer day, just right for one.
Failing that, a Heineker or a Corona would do nicely.
straight from gigs to figs - there is someththing very odd going on :)
