remind me to enter this one next year - I know the brief was to come up with something travel related but a bit more obscure and not lots of sweeping landscapes but this is a shot that won the contest. I'd say for a travel photography contest it's about as obscure as it gets and not that great or original either. or am I missing something?
Not being well travelled, I still recognize where this might have been taken. I think it does have a bit of mystery about it and makes me think about the dress and snooty look they possess;-) It's soso
i didn't look at the other candidates, if that is even possible, but i think its a pretty good shot. It is different than alot of stuff you usually see. I'd also second what Darryl said, even though he still thinks a Christmas hat is fashionable at the end of January.
It's instantly recognizable, just about everyone woould know where it was taken, it's different and somewhat clever. It's not so much the photo as the concept in this case. I don't think I would have awarded it the winner though, it probably should have been awarded "most original concept" or something like that.
ah screw it - I'm not being catty at all - I'd be a lot more impressed if the guy who won it hadnt spent so much time scouring stock libraries for 'guidance' I did a quick search through Getty and most of his shots are there in one form or another already so iconic yes but inspired or original? hardly.
Inspired and original don't matter to many. They just want to be wowed by bright and pretty colors, without being asked to think. I'm surprised a shot of jingling keys didn't win.
