Getting started

Hey, I don't know much about photography, the lingo, the equipment, programs...or anything, bu I'd really like to get started taking some pictures. As of now, money is pretty tight, and the only camera I have is the one on the back of the Sony Ericsson W810i. It's a 2.0 mp camera that is halfway decent, as far as camera phones go, but I'm sure I need better equipmennt..

Any help?

Ding ding...Perfect time to ask, a weekend, at night, when everyone is away....except ME! I'll start off by saying Caedes is a gr8 way to learn, also as a compliment to other sites and forums.

1) "Having the best camera does not mean you'll get great pictures. Spend time learning the basics of exposure, composition and depth of field. A great camera or lens will make your job easier and can make your photos better, but only if you know how to use them" - Exit, DSLreports, dimaging user. There's a bunch of other interesting info from the posts here

2) Take pictures...pretty simple. Great way to get better.

3) "Rules of Photography, The". Teaches the basics.

4) Morguefile.com - Classroom. More photography stuff.

5) EyeforPhotos.com. The guides on the site are kindof useful.

6) Download The GIMP. It's basically the free version of photoshop. You might also want to look into other programs, but this should be good for now (I guess). Programs like this just help the picture look better...sometimes worse if not used correctly...It can increase/decrease stuff like saturation, sharpness (unsharp mask is rather useful), image size (to resize so it's uploadable to Caedes), levels, etc.

...was this sort of what you were looking for? The reading may be going overboard at the moment. Downloading software and taking photos would be two of the more important things to do at the moment.

Noah is (unusually) most wise in his words :-) it would be pretty pointless to splash out on anything overly flash whilst your finding your feet - many compact cameras now feature a lot of the things you will need to learn for using DSLR's as they have now started to incorporate manual setting options where you can mess around with exposure and apertures etc. and as he pointed out - there are a lot of people here in the community who are more than happy to help you out either by PM or by posting on the forums. Have a check through the photography forums before you ask though as chances are your question may have already been covered in detail at an earlier date.
