Photography of course, where’s your mind?!?!

I’m in the Jefferson City, MO Photo Club and need some opinions. I’ll be displaying my work(s) at a local Missouri Conservation site, The Runge Center in May of this year and need some advice from my Caedes family of friends of what you think I should show. The overall topic of course is Missouri Conservation, so I’m thinking of a landscape, flower, something along those lines. The displays are required to be “framed” so to speak which I’m not opposed to…however, I’m thinking of possibly doing a “gallery wrap”…a picture on canvas stretched to make a hanging picture. Anyway, I’m kinda looking at my gallery thus far and thinking of… Detonation , Glittering Prize , Too Close For Comfort or maybe Sanctify Yourself . I just don’t know and need y’alls input. You can view my entire gallery RIGHT HERE as any suggestions WILL NOT be overlooked.

I will for sure show one and possibly two depending on the price of framing and mating and / or gallery wrapping.

I truly appreciate anyone who takes time to make a comment on what they think would make for a good 1st local public show piece!!

Hey Randy,

First, congratulations ... and I am sure that whatever images you finally decide on will be showstoppers. :o)

Now then ... I will return with some image suggestions, however, I have some general thoughts.

I would definitely give due consideration to the indigenous flora and fauna, particularly those species that might be found on the trails and in and around the conservation area first and foremost.

As much as it is a generalized topic, I do believe that those images that serve to heighten the setting and experience of the The Runge Center will probably draw more attention. A balance then perhaps. 50/50 - Runge images and then broadening the geographical scope would be what I would think would be a good mix.

Perhaps, if you have some of the literature you could provide a few summary statements (direct quotes would be great), so 'we' can better get an idea of the wording and possibly might be able to give a take on what it is that they are looking for. Just another thought.

Showing off the 'treasures' that could be lost if efforts are not made to conserve those areas/habitats ... could be your theme.

And good thing that you still have some time to capture some winter shots and then possibly some spring and early summer. 'Seasonal change' could be another theme.

I shall return ... and once again ... congratulations. :o)

Hey Randy,

Just taking the tour once more through your work and of particular note is the absence of at least ... at least one of your shots of Tradescantia Virginiana such as:

Sing Me Away

or ...

So Many Lies.

I also like In My World as a fine example of the areas that are probably threatened. (If I may be so bold, this image just needs some of the contrasts kicked up and she is good to go in my mind.)

"Detonation" is quite good. Explosive imagery, one could say. :oP

Couldn't resist ... I would, again humbly suggesting here ... a small reworking of the image and go with the interior framing as a landscape orientation, not square. At least to the extent that the three main blooms you have captured are not cut off in any way.

Another alternative, and it's VQ (V-isual Q-uotient) could be easily determined if the species is indigenous to your area for one ... and two, whether or not it's environments or natural habitats are threatened. Flying Flower appeals to me because of the symmetry in sizes and to a lesser degree, shapes of the surrounding leaves mimicked by the butterfly itself.

Will be back with some more suggestions.

In the meantime ... a friendly ... *bump* ... back to the top of the discussions. :o)

Ok, you have to stop posting more images ... it's getting difficult to pick the great ones as they are multiplying on a daily basis. :oP

However, I really like your recent ... To Look At You - MAD.

Other humble suggestions from this viewer, include another of your bird images; Carpodacus mexicanus. Really liking the angular lines, colour contrast and textures of the wood in this one.

The concept of your "Accentuate" series is particularly visually intriguing. Sure to invite the viewer in for a closer look. Of those, I nominate Accentuate # 05. Bit of a personal bias here for the fuller view.

Merge would work equally as well in my mind, if you changed the border to something more understated. The image is excellent.

Ahh, found it ... one of your best shots of Tradescantia Virginiana.

Rotate your Fanciful 180 degrees counter clock wise ... and it is a rockin' shot. I really like this one.

And I cannot not disinclude this rare and endangered species ... from possible consideration. Missouri's finest. :oP

Annnnnd ... that's all folks. :oD

How you will ever choose I dont know,
I think 'In My World' is a great one.
Other suggestions are
Honey Hole

Tradescantia Virginiana has also already been mentioned - it would definitely be on my list too.

Any of your bird studies - they are all exceptional. ALL of your bird studies :)

Thanks again to all for the grrreat input!!

I ended up going with:

Sanctify Yourself . 14x11 on metallic paper, matted & framed.

Bennett Spring . 20x10 glossy, matted & framed.

and

Magnolia x soulangiana . 20x16 in a Gallery / Canvas Wrap.

They're in the shop now getting worked over and I'll be showing them in the month of May. Thanks again for all the support and encouragement, I truly appreciate it!!

I did forget to mention...they're all for sale (after May)!! 8~) I can't believe how much it is for prints, matting & framing...I spent $ 425.00 in total on all three. Ugh!!

Money ... well spent methinks.

Would love to see the finished works in all of their $425.00 glory. Post some shots of ... 'we' don't mind. :o)

Best of luck Randy.
