Just a day old and unravelling already, Microsoft quote:

“Microsoft said the exploit was "technically possible" but there was no need to worry.
The firm has pointed out that in order for the flaw to be exploited the speech recognition feature would need to be activated and configured and both microphone and speakers would have to be switched on.”

Yeah - because nobody ever has their speakers or mic switched on, well apart from anyone with a laptop - which has these all built in anyways - or anyone using voip or messenger apps.

All in all it has been a bit of a rough week for Microsoft. The big Vista launch ended up being a bit of a damp squib with a decidedly luke warm reception from the loyal windows fan base. Needless to say, the legions of geekdom immediately set to trying to break the system and expose its flaws and on cue, they started to appear.

Another major move not mentioned much was the departure of Bryan Lee from Microsoft for ‘personal reasons’. Bryan Lee was corporate vice president at Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, and played a critical role in shaping the Xbox game console business and the introduction of its Internet Protocol television software and Zune MP3 player. Early launch problems of the Xbox 360 and almost cataclysmically bad sales figures for the Zune seam to have sealed his fate. Launched in November in time for the holiday spending spree, the Zune failed to make any impact ranking only 18th in the Christmas sales figures against other manufacturers. Microsoft’s revised sales projections say that “we hope to ship 1 million units by June 07” - sounds good until you realise that Apple’s iconic if a little bit fragile wunderkind sold 21 million units per month in the Christmas period alone.

I heard that some users tried and successfully deleted files that they could not retrieve? I heard it on the business news today. Scary scenario. I can get Vista free with the laptop I got for Xmas, but at this time, I am going to pass on it until I get more info & feedback. ;=)

I would pass on anything at this point, until they totally twist my arm to have it...I'll probably never have MS Vista, I'll probably upgrade to MS Detonation SP76 in 2012 when basically forced to.

The "Defender" scares me...I've heard of people having mp3 files on their PC and switching over to Vista and it totally erases all your mp3 files!! 8~O

~waits for SP2 for Vista next week~

For some reason I thought of a Bart Simpson quote when I read this: "I'll keep my crappy sponges, thanks."

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... ohh sorry ... was counting my crappy sponges.

*hugs his crappy sponges*

Prior to the big ... ahem ... launch, the Microsoft sites in general were experiencing much turmoil. I feel comforted ... now then ... where do I signup? :oP

And have you seen the recommended specs for running Vista? Holy crap.

Read this and then this from Microsoft themselves.

I tested out RC1 a while back and it is really nice. It warns you when something that hasn't run before tries to install something so i can see it being more difficult to get a virus and such. Seemed pretty good. Going from what i experienced i would probably agree with what microsoft said. I would imagine when they say that it would need conformation it would be like the new program trying to install. It would stop everything and ask if you wanted to continue before it did anything. So if you say yes, then you deserve what is coming. It was also pretty nice to use. It also seemed pretty stable. I'd still be using it if it wasn't for alot of my hardware (fully functional touchpad on laptop was the biggie) not having drivers yet. My laptop was of course older than vista, so i would imagine anything to be vista compatible (last couple months) would work great. If i could pick it up for free and had a computer that was compatible i wouldn't hesitate for a minute.

the main reason I wont be upgrading to Vista is the cost - which is, frankly, nothing short of daylight robbery. If I were to upgrade my laptops XP pro and office pro to the equivalent new versions it would cost me just a few pennies short of £600 - for an upgrade!

I could go down to my local PC retailer and buy a new laptop already preinstalled with it for less than that. It strikes me that this pricing policy is little more than a shabby attempt to drive sales of new pc's whilst marginalising existing users who can either not afford the upgrade or have computers unable to cope with the demands of the new system. I’m pretty sure that trying to recoup the many years of delayed development costs in one big hit is playing a part in it too.

All Microsoft will end up doing is ostracising previously loyal users and encouraging software piracy all at the same time. There is no justification whatsoever for such a steep upgrade price when you consider that alternate OS installs such as Linux or OSX range from being free to about £80 for a FULL version. It will be interesting to see that if the next release of OSX, Leopard, is as expected - capable of being installed on any platform, pc or mac, without modification, how many disgruntled wintel folks will give it a try. at around £30 per license if bought in a multipack, it's a small price to pay compared to M$'s offering.

Hmmmmm....... I wonder if we would be able to install OS X 1.5 (Leopard) on my mother's Sony Viao laptop's second partition....That would make her very happy. We have to get the multipack to upgrade the four Macs in the family anyways.

Ooh, it's coming soon! I'm so excited!

Because it means that my brother is going to be locked away in his room for about a week... ah, what a blissful week it shall be.
