Seeking Opinions

Once again I call on you good people for advice :) I have been dissappointed in a few of my photos recently regarding their results from the VB. Then again, I have been surprised and delighted at others - always the opposite to my own opinions. THIS is one I was particularly happy with and because I understand many do not like borders and frames I left it without. I had high hopes for it and I would never complain too much about a 66, but when I compare it with some of my others that have much scored higher I am at a loss as this seems (to me, but what do I know lol) a better image. HERE is one I spent much time on (framed :) ) and it did the dreaded plummet from a high score down to 74 overnight. Which way to go - to frame or not to frame? Neither seems to work. Are they just bad pictures to start with ? Boring old 'not another flower" photos ?
Once again, this is not a complaint, just an attempt to try and understand what makes a good picture. I seem to recognize what does in others' work but never in my own. I always seem to get it wrong.

Of course I've commented already on both Eve. I like framing and borders...sometimes. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I used to not care for them at all, but, have since found a luv for them.

Perhaps your expectations are to high? Lily the Pink is at 74, which in my book is very respectable. Again, I made my thoughts know on that one prior. Shades of Pink I thought was very nicely done and again a 66 is pretty good. You do marvelous work and should be proud no matter what!! You seem to have lotsa fun and you have a great eye!! The c-index...again, it's just a number.

I feel like I've given many offerings to Caedes and to date I think I have one (1) image that's currently a 90...everything else is lower, but that doesn't bother me.

Anywho...just keep having fun and keep up the great work!!

And your flower pics get a better c-index than this. ... ;-)

I personally think the c-index on both mine and your pics are pretty fair.

Eve ... both flower images are beautiful. I love frames & yes, some images do look better without frames than others. As for the c-index ... for myself it has no merit ( I totally ignore it). I was taught a long time ago that art / photography is about emotion. I try to embrace how the artist felt (their excitement & joy when capturing a scene, flowers or whatever, painting on canvas, or when creating a digital image). That is what I believe art is all about & to know I put a smile on someone's face is far more important to me than a number. In my opinion, you are not doing anything wrong ... you are just trying to express yourself at that moment (frame or no frame). You have some very beautiful & lovely images .... I enjoy all of them & they always make me smile. :-)

I would have more faith in the c-index if it was derived from a mathematically programmed robot .... humans have turned out to be the weakest link .. and are DOOMED

(*clears throat*)

Lily The Pink .. (currently a 69) .. is a MUCH more worthy image of the two .. the variety of shapes and subtle color qualities make it a feast for the eyes ... and, with the framing, I could easily see this on my dining room wall, being dusted by the butler (If I had a dining room or a butler)

Shades of Pink .. (currently a 67) .. doesn't float my boat, and I lose interest in it rather quickly .. there is nothing that says "hey, look at me" .. and it may suffer from sharpness issues that would have given a more 3D impression

.. and now we return to our regularly scheduled program .. "cynics on parade"

Maybe I'm not THE expert to find out causes for high or low c-indexes but I watched the two photos now for a while and came to this conclusion:
On Lily The Pink you did a lot of shading into white on the borders which takes away some things to see.
On Shades of Pink you captured three beauties and 1½ others. Maybe that was too much, maybe you did better with capturing the prettiest full screen to focus the viewer on what you want him to see.
Most of your flowers I really love, these two are not part of them. I never thought about the cause of it till now.
That's of course only my own opinion which might help you ;o)

Thanks all , much appreciated. :) Looks like I 'doomed' Lily The P anyway, down to 69 lol.
Noah, I am not suggesting my numbers are unfair. Just that I don't understand. For instance, take a look at Orange Gazania and tell me why this deserved 87. One simple click , slap on a bit of a black border and thats it, three minutes effort. Lily the Pink I spent literally hours on, to me it looks far better and yet it is 18 points lower. Perhaps 'bold' is in and 'pretty' is out at the moment :)
No, I'm not taking it too seriously, as long as it is fun I will continue.
Keith - you don't have a butler?? How do you manage? lol
Randy and Sherree - thanks also, you are all more sensible than I. Guess I just had a crabby day yesterday - age does that you know :)

Edit: Chris, you replied while I was writing this - thanks for taking the time, most appreciated :)

I personally like Orange Gazania better than your other two posts. It looks more....professional - widescreen, sharp, not-so-cheezy-border. *I* prefer that look over faded white edges on a tan background look.

But um, orange gazania is a bit dark...hmm, i would vote...erm...a....7 (marked down for lighting, originality, and difficulty of capture...and the one pedal is wilted)....but an 87(?), yeah, interesting.

*edit* that doesnt really ans your original question...but more of an 'image comment'.

Sorry Noah - I will inform the groundsman down at the creek there was a wilted petal on the gazania - photos taken 'in the wild' are rarely perfect lol. These are not arranged florists flowers. It does not look dark on my monitor but I guess we all have different settings. The lighting was beyond my control as I do not have the capacity to adjust the sunshine level :) I guess what you are really saying is that it was over-rated ? Must have just struck a time when people needed cheering up by happy flowers.

I like Shades of Pink a lot - there's something about filling the frame with flowers; it works for me. I like it more than Lily the Pink, though that is very good too, and I would be happy if I could take photographs like that. It makes me think of the difference between a cottage garden and a formal garden - the cottage garden has always been my preference, though I do see the beauty of the formal garden as well.

I like all three photos; maybe the Gazania is the most striking, but then my next choice (very close) would be the Shades of Pink. So there are some of us out there. ;-).
