Cell Phone Wallpapers

How many people on here have cell phones, where they are as vigilant about it's wallpapers as they are with their desktop? I know I am. It would be cool if there were a cell phone gallery. It wouldn't take up much space, most of my images I make for the phone are only 176x220 and in .gif format. Which is usually a tiny 30k. I may be all alone here though, let me know how many of you are out there.

I have thought about adding this to the site. The only reason I've not added it is that it would take quite a bit of work and the audience would probably be pretty small.

It would be some work, but probally the biggest issue would be finding an "umbrella" for the images resolutions. For example I had a Motorola T722i with a screen res of 120x160, and my V300 is 176x220. I'm sure there are lots of different screen sizes too.

there are no shortage of mobi wallpaper sites already on the web - granted most of them offering a lot of dross fan based imagery which kind of predicts what would happen here. - if you like an image could you not just download it and reedit it to your phones appropriate res?

I have done the whole edit thing, but that tends to distort the image, crop off things, and consider a resolution of 1024 x 768 compared to 176 x 220. they are two completly different shapes. Often resulting in rotation of an image to keep it all on the screen and some images have a definate direction to look at them.

yes - i see the problem there - I guess its hard to get an image of any real depth or clarity into a res that small.

Caedes is right. The effort would be for nothing.I am also very into mobiles, and planning to put a Cell Phones Review site online soon. But only the effort to put the images into the ratio of every different cell phones screen is enough.Very few people would make such an effort. And there is no script to do the resizing for you. ;(

Well my idea was to create a script to automatically do the resizing based on the person's phone. It's still way too much work though.

Even if there were only one or two standard sizes, I do wonder if many of the artists here would make wallpapers in that size? I imagine the "market" would be a bit limited.

It would be alot of work. But if you're interested, check out www.myphonefiles.com It has free ringtones, and images. They also have a window for sending it to your phone. I signed up for a trial membership, which allows you to resize and format image types(ie: Jpg, gif...) amongst some other upgrades to the regular account. Their scripts run kinda buggy at times but it works ok, I guess. The only problem with that site is the selection of backgrounds aren't that good. Also, I agree with the difficulty of trying to cram detail into a tiny image. I make my own backgrounds for my phone, and due to the small working area I don't get many that look all that good or different. It's sorta the same things over and over. I figured that maybe if there were a "big" response maybe we could get images together for a collective pool of backgrounds, as the rest of this site works for desktops. Oh well, just some food for thought.

How do you get the image from your PC to the phone? Some sort of cable I imagine?

My phone has internet acess, it's not like regular internet though. It's simplified text only versions of sites. However I can visit the URL of an image (as long as it doesn't exceede my screeen resolution and isn't too too big) and then have the option of saving the image. I also can send messages/pictures to an email address. So I use my ISP web space they gave me to up load images and then I tap it in on my phone. But I can type in any URL for instance your avatar http://www.caedes.net/images/buttons/MDlpP13b7iCRljigNc.jpg could be accesed on my phone but not a full size image form this site.

Well for the resizing:The problem with the resizing wouldnt just be the Pixels of the image.Would be the ratio. For an example an image made in the ratio of nokia which is 0,8 .Would be cropped or some of the image would be blank at the screen of a phone which has a ratio of 0,75.Means the 0,5 of that screen would be blanked or resized without referring to the proportion of the original image.Resizing is not a problem, the proportions of the image must be right. So you must make every image all over again referring to the size of every different cellphone. And this referring to caedes again is a difficult work except we have some volunteers ; p
And for the SMS Send Engine:As you may all know or guess these kind of services are based on Mobile Service Providers. So if we use this kind of engine it would cost something. But sending it to a specific Pool in the Caedes.net which can be accessed via phones would be great.
And once the viewers start to view the page we will encounter browers problems occuring due to the "physics" of cell phone browsers coding.Which would be simply:phones with opera browsers or that type would do the whole thing easily but the ones with java based browsers will be limited on downloading/viewing the image. They are short in cache size.So theorically phones with SymbianUIQ,S60 os' would be okay but the ones with S20,S40 and Sagem's would be a disaster.

One of the phones I use is a LG 4400 my provider wants you to DL stuff from them like most.So I went to Radio Shack and bought a usb cable that would work for my phone, went to the site got the drivers for the cable then I downloaded a program called bitpim.By doing this I now have the ability to load wallpapers, ringtones, and sync my phone info.I use Photoshop to resize pictures so I can use them on this phone.
