...starting to sound like myspace? Ok, yes, it does, but...

1) What gear do you use (cameras, tripods, lens, etc)
2) Favorite programs (apophysis for example)
3) Optional biography(?)...i'm not to fond of this idea myself.
4) anything else that seems 'art-worthy'

Seems like this could be an easy addition to the user info page that would take a relativly short time compared to revamping the voting booth.

we're lucky if they fill in anything .. I am often puzzled whether I should use 3 syllable words when addressing them

be a shame if those extra empty cells are later traced to the straw that broke the camels back .. sending the intarwebs spiraling down into a blink of nothingness

and with it ... mankind

I was thinking more of a thing where if they do fill it out, it would appear, if they dont, it wont show up like:

Age:

But more like:

I'd be significantly more likely to fill in a box for "programmes used", say, than for "age", "gender" etc. What business are they of anybody here? Is anyone really interested in knowing that I am a 5042.9 year old it from Alpha Centauri who protests hyperspace bypasses for a living and campaigns for small green squiggles on my days off?

That I never use apop., now, that people might have a legitimate interest in...

I only want to know a couple things about a person I am conversing with online .. I will make up the others as needed

they are .. AGE & LOCATION

LOCATION .. because there is no point in my asking for a ride to work if they live in Botswana ....

and AGE .. (*see the aforementioned 3 syllable word remark*)

I think I'd like to have a free-style comment area where I can post whatever I want. I think some might use it for an evolving commentary on things both inside and outside of Caedes.net.

Or maybe a spot to link to outside sites of interest. This could be a way for people to learn about each other by seeing what interests them.

How about a spot for a portrait of each of us? Voluntary of course, but it might be nice to see each other.

I'm not sure it is appropriate to ask for people's ages - at least without disallowing the posting of ages under 18, for example. For those over 18, I doubt that age is much of a guide to a person's ability to understand 3 syllable words. Keifer can no doubt correct me on this one.

I would be similarly concerned about the posting of portaits. This is OK for adults, but it is not OK to enoucrage minors to post this sort of information about themselves in my opinion. I believe laws affect this sort of issue in some countries but I'm not really sure how it all works.

Age is already in the profile... if you don't want to share, leave it blank. There is also a "self" gallery in photography already.

I personally think it is lame when you don't include the age in your profile. If im sitting on the bus and i start talking to someone i have an idea of how old they are. When im on here, there is no way to tell. It is good to know when critiquing, or just plain have a conversation. I would likely be alittle more forgiving to a 10 year old if they didn't get the picture focused on the right spot then i would be someone my age. So it would be bad to lose that. That said, im all for an equipment field. Same kind of thing can be said about that. Ill be nicer to someone using a simple point and shoot if their depth of field could be better, than if they are using a SLR.

You don't recognise the potential problems in encouraging children to make their ages known?

Equipment, fine. I put that in the same category as programmes. It seems eminently sensible to make that sort of information available. There's no point in my suggesting somebody use function x to improve an image if the person is using a programme without function x. (It might be worth suggesting a different programme, but that's a different issue, and depends on cost etc. etc.) I think knowing somebody's OS is useful too. If somebody suggests I try Apop., it's just pointless as I have no way to run it. Or most of the other fractal programmes, sadly.

No, i don't see a problem with having children put their ages. That was my point. I see a problem with children giving away their location and full names and setting up meetings with people online. I also see a problem with giving children full access to the interent unsupervised. Parents should try and keep track of what their kids do online, and teach them why they shouldn't plan meetings and give away information about how they can be found online (like what school they go to). It is the same thing as when they take their kids to the mall. Children need to be taught a healthy fear of strangers regardless as to where they meet them. Doesn't matter if they are online or not. When i see kids at the mall i can guess how old they are. Why does it need to be any different online?

Anywho im really more concerned about older people that don't put their ages. After awhile you can start to tell that someone is of age by they way they comment and such, and they still don't have their age on there. That is truly what i find the most lame.

If we're going with the shopping mall analogy then children shouldn't be posting in discussions etc. at all just as they shouldn't be talking to strangers at the mall. I'm not suggesting they shouldn't be posting on caedes, by the way, but just indicating why I'm not convinced that particular analogy is helpful.
