OK - just a question/comment - is caedes supposed to be a wallpaper site or a digital art site that only supports desktop resolutions?
The thing is, there are a lot of good wallpapers on the site, but there are even more great submissions that are awesome peices of art but make horrible desktop wallpapers. I think its time for caedes to decide if it wants to limit itself to desktop wallpapers or not.
I know for a fact that wallpaper res graphics are not the only graphics i design. I personally do typography works, posters, CD covers, and plenty of other things. I know there are more people that do the same.
So what I'm proposing is 2 divisions of caedes.net - desktop wallpaper (since it dominates the site) and graphic design. Not only would it draw more people like myself to the site, it would also provide diversity (nothing but wallpapers gets pretty boring).
The first thing that caedes will say is: "it's too hard to configure/code", but listen to this:
All you do is add another group of galleries that support only 326x247 thumbnails (since that's already the size of the thumbnails you generate). The user uploads the thumb and links to a full version of the work (i.e the user provides hosting for his/her images). Most users have access to free space so it would be no big deal.
Please think about this because a couple friends of mine (including myself) are becoming tired of JUST wallpaper, we wanna show our other work too.
I've always considered Caedes.net as a digital art site that only supports desktop resolutions.
There are sites that support different size images, such as deviantart.com...
Personally I dont see much point in it; you can upload whatever size image you want, just put a border around it... surely there isn't any advantage to having different sized frames if you are just veiwing the image on a screen? Unless you are intending for people to print them or something? But I would have no objection, I just don't understand why t would make any difference...
I think it would be cool to be able to upload something other than wallpapers too. Like banners for websites ect. so you could get some input on it. Great idea, I'm all for it.
Samatar - borders would work, but it would require saving a different version of my image just for caedes use - and i'd still have to list it in a wallpaper category.
Piner - I love deviantart and would use it in a second if it weren't so darn slow :)
I agree with Samatar on this. I don't really see the point. What would people do with images like that? Wallpapers appeal to everyone and is a useful thing. With a banner or some other form, I would simply take a look at it and perhaps comment, but after a while I'll focus more on the wallpaper images because I can actually do something with them.
Perhaps you guys could start a forum topic with links to the images you want to share. It would basically serve the same purpose, and won't really need any changes on Caedes to accomadate them.
I have for a while now been working on an expansion of the site to include images in any aspect ratio. It actually wouldn't be too much work to code since I've already don'e most of it. The only thing that is delaying it's implementation is the actaully doing it part. I feel pretty confident in saying that I'll have it done in time for the software release following the one that's coming up.
Sounds real cool, Caedes. I have several hand-drawn pieces that I would
post on that part of Caedes.net (after I scan them).
They are human figures standing and I would hate to shrink them down
to fit in a desktop format. :c)
Having a separate gallery is a wonderful idea. I've noticed in my short time on caedes.net that the standard images in landscape dimensions that are full-color and not of people tend to get better ratings than otherwise. It would be neat if there was a section where those who vote on the images aren't biased toward wallpaper-type aspect ratio and composition.
BTW from a web-master's perspective I also like the idea of having the users responsible for hosting their full-sized images, but I know there are users out there who can't manage this.
The hosting of images and bandwidth is absolutely no problem for the site right now. The new server has over 160 Gigs of space and 1.4 TB of bandwidth per month. =D
