Photoshop Question

Salutations...

I'm doing my hmwk and ran across a problem...MOI HAVE PROBLEM IN PHOTOSHOP!? Funny thing is, it's sooo simple, but i've never really done this b4.

...but first the background info: So my project is to make a flyer (flier?) for a business as an advertisement. So, i was thinking about putting the images and text on a black background.

Now for my problem: say i want to put a logo (office depot) on the black background (i think this is copyright infringment but my teacher told me to do it and I don't feel like having a long talk about it with him when i have no idea what i'm talking about). Anyways, so i'm trying to put this logo on the black background so all you see is the red text (the office depot logo) and not the white stuff it was originally on.

..so i've tried "darken" "multiply" "soft light" "hard light" "overlay" "lighten" "screen" "color overlay" etc etc etc! Non of them work. I've tried using the magical want tool, but that doesnt work (b/c there is a shadow and it leaves a white outline).

Ne1 know how to do this?

Nvm, i just thought up another idea...i inverted the layer and changed the hue.

If the actual logo is a single colour, can you select by colour on that colour, invert the selection and then cut or fill with black? I'm assuming Photoshop has some "select by colour" function since Gimp does.

Don't know if that helps. There are probably other ways, but that sounds the simplest from your description.

It does...i just didn't think of that. >_> typical...the invert method worked pretty well though.

The other thing you'll need to do @ some point is become familiar with the pen tool and silhouette out your logo. (Draw a path around it, "Make Selection" of your path, invert and delete).

I tried that...but b/c it has a dark to light gradient on the border it shows a whiteish gradient outline... *ick*

If it was me I would start with a transparent layer then paste the logo on that layer, now you should have 2 layers. After that goto your layer styles and put a color overlay on the logo layer. Then fill the bottom layer with black.

i did that (i think) and the logo disapeared. Here's what i've tried:

1) Open the file
2) ctrl + J
3) ctrl + N
4) switch the two layers around (so the logo is on top
5) fill the transparent layer w/ blk
6) tried every layer style and non of them worked

1) Magic wand...set to 5, 10, 20, 55, etc
2) click
3) drag onto transparent layer
4) fill in the layer behind the logo layer blk
5) bing! white outline

1) open logo
2) ctrl + N
3) ctrl + J
4) fill the transparent layer blk
5) erase the logo layer (the white)
6) end result looks fuzzy...and takes a long time

1) open, make a new layer, blah blah
2) Invert logo
3) layer styles --> forgot which i chose
4) Hue change
5) copy that layer
6) new logo layer to B&W (to get rid of the noise on the border
7) erase the B&W logo so you can see the red beneath it.
8) by far the best/easiest method

The problem with the pen tool is even if you get right on the edge, you still have a white glow, or if you get closer, you get rid of the nice gradient (and i'm too lazy to make a new one) --> i guess this *could* work if you spent lots of time on it

(like my negative attitude?) =P

um ... not that i am planning on getting involved .. and bringing the full weight of my Photoshop expertise to bear on the problem ...

but ...

why don't you post the logo to a host .. and link to it ... so that CAT can do your homework for you ... or ... at the very least we will ALL be on the same page as to what exactly you are talking about

you are distracting me from Brady Bunch reruns

it's an office depot logo...here

Btw, it just hit me that the pen tool would work (with what i know)..just upsize/upscale(?) the logo after i do the penning. >_>

..i'll upload my masterpiece in a sec. here

Looks like you figured it out.

The easiest way to do that one is use the magic wand tool to select the letters, invert your selection, decrease the selection by 1 pixel (which will take care of your whiteish outlines), and then kill your background.

invert, copy, hue, eraseistill think is better! =P (i'm not admitting i'm wrong here)

i'll still have to add a bunch more things to my little ad othr than just a logo, so yeah, i'll have lots of time to play with the magic wand and pen. :)

I can see why, since you've got the black to white to do on the other letters, too. But I don't think that would be easier if you just had the red (as initially described).

Not that I use Photoshop. Well, once or twice for about five minutes about half a dozen years ago...
