I just wonder:
I did a fractal in 3000x3000 but it is on 8,9MB. I have not upload it because of that. If I take it down to 2000x2000 it still be very heavy about 3.5MB.
How heavy is the best? Is it a limit for how heavy a picture can bee?
Is it many people that still have modem and not broadband?
I can imagine that it take a while to download a picture like this with a modem :))

I saw that Randy (Hottrockin) had upload a Big picture. He said that it was upload in 7,40MB but when I push the 3000x3000 button and download it it became only 1MB. Did Caedes site automaticly do something with the pictures so that they not are so heavy?
I am not sure what the file size limit is these days .. I've not seen it mentioned
chances are good that you can save that image at a slightly lesser quality and knock the size down quite a bit ... when I render originals at 3200x2400 they are 8.5 MB on average .. reducing down to 1600x1200 results in an 800k image, even with multiple layers .. and I can reduce the size even further if I choose
using Photoshop .. select "save for web" in the "file" menu .. the exact final size is revealed in the lower left corner .. and you can adjust this size via the "Quality" box on the right side .. for example, if it defaults to 65, change it downward in 5 point increments .. you will be able to see any quality degradation in your image (should you make any drastic changes)
if you don't have Photoshop, the software you have should have a similar function
but, needless to say, a 3000x3000 image is going to be a larger file than a 1600x1200 ... such is the price of being an 'artisté'
edit: .. YES .. the site re-jpg's the image you upload .. even for the fullsize uploaded version
I have PS and when I take the size down to 2000x2000 and "save it for web" and set the quality on 88% the picture be 2.4MB and maybe it is okej if the site re-jpeg´s the image too. I think I try that :)
try 65 or 55 .. save one of each and flip between them with your image viewer .. chances are good you won't see any major degradation (uploading to a print service might require a different plan of action) ..
I think the last image I uploaded to the web was @ 55 and resulted in a 700k file size
I think it was a major misstake *blush again* it still are 1.9MB and I understand if people does not download it :( in 1500x1500 it went like a dance but not in 2000x2000. Is that a chance that you Keith or someone can take away the 2000x2000 resolution?
I try again and download the Big version and now it works fine. Must have been my line that was bad :) But I dont think I do a big picture like this again...LOL...
It shouldn't be a problem -- the original image is only used for making the smaller sized ones automatically. It shouldn't matter how big the one you upload is, the resulting downsized images should all be the same file size ("heaviness") and quality as they would be any other way.
Yeah, go for the gusto and upload the 8.9MB one @ 3000x3000...the site will handle it!!
~watch, tomorrow we'll get the page "site currently down" message~
Hehehe, I teasin' baby, I teasin'...it should be fine in its original state and if you have DSL or cable it'll only take about a minute or less. King Keifer has dial-up and it would take him 17 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes and 22 seconds...right mister?!?! 8~O
You shouldn't owrry about the file size of the image when you upload it to caedes.net. When we get your uploaded image we first save it as a JPG with a standard compression factor. This way we can make sure that all images are of a uniform compression quality and don't take up too much storage space. Tis also means that you should upload the image in a lossless format (like PNG) in order to avoid image degradation due to double compression.

Yes there are a number of others that it will accept. Probably TIFF and BMP are ok, I just prefer PNG because it generally has better compression (lossless) than the others.
