Picture Quality Loss

I resize most of my uploads to 1600x1200 which are now being shown as 1280x1024. I know this is something that is being attended to but wondered if anyone else had experienced a noticible degrade of quality because of this? I was very disappointed to see one of my uploads today, Flight displaying with such deterioration in the full size version,(ie. a definite loss of sharpness and clarity) and on checking some others of my recent uploads found they had all suffered.
Perhaps would be a good idea to resize to the available resolutions until things are back to normal??

I have had a rethink about this and I suppose it is just because my screen is larger than the picture that it is blurred?
So uploading a smaller size would have no effect?

One question..are you uploading your work as jpeg's, or as png's? jpegs tend to lose quality in the upload process even on a good day..

Jpegs. Perhaps I'll try png. From this end they look no different.
I have not noticed it before, as rarely look at my own images full size.

I do after every upload, just as a means of quality control. I've actually pulled several pics down after seeing them full size, and not being happy with the quality.

what? .. we can look at our own images .. AFTER upload?

(*scampers off*)

PNG is just NOT a savory option for me until we get the Neural Net upgrade and I can just "think" my images online

wait, that might be slower than dial-up speeds

EVE, I would not panic at this stage .. the site is obviously getting in touch with its schizophrenic side. As far as image sizing .. perhaps *caedes is fussing with the JPEG algorithms

.. maybe if we asked nicely, the site could pass the full size (un re-jpegged) original to the viewer when the full size is requested .. that gives the artist control over that size

and might bring about world peace ... worth a try, you don't know

here's a thought. since a screen-filling size already pops up for each image in the VB, would it be easier to set that same size for "full-view"?

whilst your JPEG and PNG's look the same at your end - the server at ceades resaves all uploads as JPEGS again so if you upload in a format that already has a compression on it - you will end up recompressing an already compressed file - thus destroying a little more of its data integrity - if you upload in a non compressed format like PNG then the server compression will be the first hit it gets and damage will be minimalised.

Lyn: let me see if I understand you. You are saying that the largest image size that you get is 1280x1024 even when you upload the image at 1600x1200. This shouldn't be happening since I have the system always offer the image at the same resolution as the author uploaded it.

If you are instead talking about the degredation in quality of the 1280x1024 version, then the suggestions to use PNG are likely to help. Let me know which is the case.

If I may ... Lyn?

I just looked and your image "Flight" is offered to me at my native resolution of 1152 X 864, as well as the 1600 X 1200 size.

Have you looked into your "Display Properties?" (Assuming here your pc OS is Windows.)

In particular, under the "Desktop" tab, I would check to see how your desktop images are being displayed ... namely under "Position" ... "Center" or "Stretch."

And then check your "Settings" for the resolution size.

I mention this, because I saw a discussion thread on this with regards to an image being 'stretched' ... found in this section, if my memory serves me correct. Hope this helps. :o)

Caedes - well, I am at a loss because now, 8 hours later, three sizes appear, 675x506,1280x1024, and 1600x1200, whereas the larger size was not available last night. Veiwed last night at 1280x1024 the particular image I mentioned had jagged edges and now, although it still has that size highlighted and is what downloads for full screen view, it is looking just fine.:)
Although it was early hours of the morning I swear I was wide awake and was wearing my glasses lol :)
So whatever caused it it appears to be rectifed.

Les - I have my desktop set on 'stretch' but it was not on my desktop that the faults appeared, it was just in full screen view here on the site.I actually had my 'Flight' picture on my desktop at the time (I always check them out before uploading) and when I compared the two images, full screen here and my desktop version, is when I noticed the big difference, and if I had been voting on it myself I would have given it a 4 or less!! The strange thing is that my native resolution IS 1280x1024, the largest I can display on my lovely new 19" monitor.

Keith - scamper back here, and stop looking at your own pictures:)

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Caedes had 16x12 shut down or sumpin' for a while, it seems to be working now. We used to have 4 sizes and now 3, hmmmm. The post in question seems to be more of a DOF problem than a conversion one. Clarity seems fine, color fine, DOF is tight causing some loss of focus. How did you see it degraded? PNG seems to be more in regards to color..anyone, correct me if I'm wrong as I'm not too familiar with PNG. Anywho, how was it degraded to you?

The petals of the flower which I saw as straight and sharp were zig zaggy - sorry that is the only way I can explain it. As though had zoomed it and could see individual pixels. There were only the two sizes showing then.
It is ok now though.
I made my last to uploads in PNG.
