you'd be amazed - or perhaps not - how many people buying DSLR's don't realise you can upgrade firmware on them :-)

Don't forget about those who simply don't care about it, and are to lazy to update their cameras.

No one wanted to pay to say something in my sig, so i will have to try and think of something creative now...

yep - thats a big part of it too - although they should really make the effort as firmware updates are usually for bug fixies and improvements. I think the warnings about permanently trashing your camera if you do it wrong put people off too.

can you really permanently trash it? I would have thought it would be like a computer. if you mess it all up you can just do a clean install. Interesting.

All the manufacturers carry similar caveats for firmware updates….

Canon:

Precautions - A power failure during the firmware writing operation may disable the camera.
Use a fully charged Battery Pack or dedicated AC Adapter Kit (Optional) ACK-DC20 for the firmware update.
Do not shut off the power during the firmware writing operation.
Do not open the CF card slot cover during the firmware writing operation.

Sigma:

If the battery is low during the update procedure, it might cause a malfunction and damage your camera. To avoid causing malfunction, please read the following before updating the firmware.
Please use dedicated AC adapter or fully charged battery.
Do not open the CF CARD COVER or operate camera during the firmware update.
Do not turn off the camera during the firmware update.

Nikon:

Important
The camera may be damaged if power is interrupted or camera controls are operated during the update. Do not turn the camera off, remove or disconnect the power source, or operate camera controls during the update. If the update is not completed successfully and the camera becomes inoperable, take the camera to a Nikon-authorized service representative for inspection.

I’ve had similar warnings when updating various other device’s firmware including smart phones, DVD players etc but thankfully have yet to kill one in the process.
