I'm not sure where to post this so, I guess right here is best. I think that the voting booth should have pictures set up in categories. The reason being is that my own personal preferences somewhat influence the score I'll give a picture. Such as, I don't like computer images so I'm automatically going to rate it lower. I just think there needs to be broad categories like computer images, abstract, photography..etc.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw my opinion out there!
Well, I just simply don't like voting on images that I really don't like to begin with. And I just find it to be unfair towards the people who worked on them. I never really considered my own images involved..
next question... why is my c-index low.. answer: hmmm maybe no one liked that type of art you have submitted so they voted low.. hurts doesn't it.. I find that type of comment insulting to the artists who put everything into their work.. it really gets me when people say things like "I vote low cos I don't like that style" or "I vote low cos I don't know about that style"... sometimes I wonder if people have eyes and a brain.. it doesn't take much to see if you like the colour or design..
Wonder what would happen if this happend in the real day to day life.. you go into a store and want to be served, the checkout person could say "nope not going to serve you cos I don't like the colour of your clothes.. or your hairstyle" now wouldn't you feel upset? well its the same for the artists when you say "nope gonna vote low cos its not my style"
and what do you mean with "I never really considered my own images involved.."
What you are describing is called "discriminating" against people for whatever reason there may be. However, what I was describing was a question of rating other people's works fairly. Which happens to not even be close to discriminating someone. For instance, whenever I'm voting I happen to see a lot of fractal works. I don't know how to create these types of images, I don't know much about it nor do I care much about it. I like photography, not computer images...it's just my preference, i'm not trying to offend anyone here. Which is why there needs to be categories because it's unfair for a person to vote on an image that they don't care for to begin with. I do have eyes and a brain but I believe images go further than "color and design." I personally think about how much work it takes to do it, the actual subject matter, quality of the image...the list goes on.
And when I said I didn't consider my own images, I meant I didn't think of how people may be rating my works unfairly..I made this post because I realized I was voting on images I don't know much about! So I thought I'd merely voice my thoughts..
that is kind of discriminating.. because your not voting fairly on it because #1 you don't like that style & #2 you don't know how its made.. therefore it's thrown in the "too-hard" basket and not even taking the time to look at it so it gets a low score.. personally i don't worry about how high people vote, but I know quite a lot who do.. and I think it's very unfair when people say they vote low because of those reasons.. yes computer generated images are not everyones cup of tea nor is photography, we all have preferences and we all put a lot of time and creativity into our styles.. to me its only numbers and i post on here because i enjoy creating images whether its photography, computer generated or drawings..
I just think a bit more respect of each others work is needed.. but i guess that won't happen because too many people on here has the "it's not my work or preference so who cares" attitude..
you're right .. segregation has never had anything to do with discrimination .. I don't like them, remove them from my sight
of course, if every member of this site practiced your "technique" it would have an adverse effect on the balance of forces .. and many computer artists have already left\stopped posting because of similar views expressed by others
you will probably get your wish .. someday .. hang in there
Please don't assume that I'm automatically voting lower on computer images just because I don't like them. Sure, I look at the color used, if it's a clean picture, etc. But still, I don't know enough about how computer images are created to give an honestly good vote on it. I'm really indifferent towards that category of images. What's wrong with segregation in this instance? People who like looking at photography can vote on photography, same goes with computer images, illustrations, etc. You're right I guess you could say I'm "discriminating"; though it's not like I have some type of mean intent behind it, I wouldn't have made this post if I truly didn't care, if I was really discriminating, I wouldn't have wasted my time with the issue, right?
Okay .. and we do appreciate that you DID voice your opinion .. it's just that there are other opinions as well
a little history .. prior to September of "oh five" .. the voting gadget was on each individual image .. people therefore voted only on images they were attracted to (mostly) ... this left the "lackluster" images lacking a score, because nobody was drawn to them
so voting was changed to give ALL images an equal set of eyes .. both favorable and unfavorable, in order to counter the "fluff" of having only your friends and family (so to speak) voting on your image
On the contrary, I tend to vote higher on images I do not understand so well, i.e. Fractals, computer generated images etc.
I understand if I like them, if they please my eye (both of them)and deliver a message, and the amazement that someone could create something from nothing, as it were, often gives an extra point from sheer amazement.
Often an image may seem uninspiring until you put it on your desktop and the the wow factor kicks in. (This can even happen with flowers photos lol)Voting takes time to do properly.
I suspect that some people race through their voting as an obligation without taking time to look any deeper than their first reaction.
Keep voting facetoface, you may even discover you come to enjoy fractals and the like. I did, and even ventured into experimenting with their creation. Abyssmal results, but lots of fun and a greater understanding of what it takes to make one.
I do understand why you initiated this discussion and the point you raised. It’s a matter we have all had to deal with at some time.
You need an objective way of judging the images. You could award every image a five then add or subtract points for skill, creativity, impact and so on. By following the same routine for every image you will be treating everyone fairly regardless of which field of art he or she happens to pursue.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw my opinion out there!
