Nikon D40X Connection Problem

Not too sure if I'm in the right place to be posting this, as it is probably more of a computer problem than a Camera problem.

I bought my new Nikon D40X yesterday and I've been trying to get the USB connection to work with my computer. I get an error message saying:

".........

LOL

Right when I posted this, I checked to see what the error message said, but it worked this time!! Wow, I've been trying for hours!!! I love you caedes.net

Sorry for wasting a post, but thought I would keep it up because I can't stop laughing...

Thanks guys

ok well, I got the "Found New Hardware" to pop up, but it can't locate the software (even with the PictureProject CD in. I've been reading a manual and it says PictureProject should just pop up with a transfer box, but it isn't. Please help if you can!! Thank you guys much.

I can't remember what happened when I tried to set up my Nikon in Windows the first time... I don't recall having trouble but it was a while ago. I suggest you check the Nikon site for drivers, or if no luck there, try a google search for "nikon d40x drivers". I would have thought that the drivers were probably already included in windows though? I know with my Mac I just plug the thing in and open Image Capture, there is no need to install any Nikon software.

Just curious...
are you connecting your camera to your PC prior to uploading the drivers? With both of my cameras (fuji and olympus), came the stern warning not to connect the cam, until the software was loaded. It tends to make the computer think it needs to hunt around elsewhere for something (a program) to make the cam work, as it sees it as a peripheral.

Both my D50 and D200 - without any drivers - can be read by my computer(s). So your saying when you stick the USB cord in and turn the camera on, you can't go to 'my computer' and see the files inside the 'removable disk'?

...i re-read your post, and I must say, I have no clue what the problem is.

I have recently purchased a D80 and in the in-camera setup menu there's a choice for how I want the USB out to work. The first is 'Mass Storage', which I use, and the second is 'PTP', which should be selected when using 'Camera Control Pro'. Not sure if it helps, hope it does.

if you are using Vista - you need to download a patch from the nikon site to fix connectivity - theres a thread somewhere about here with a link to it.

Ok here's where I'm at now,

I've tried reinstalling the PictureProject 1.7 and I noticed that the drivers that were installed says

"Preparing to install driver software (INF files) for D1, D1X, and D1H"

and I am not so sure those drivers will work for the D40X? That's really confusing me and I think it may be a problem.

Also, I do have the camera on Mass Storage which the manual suggested for me to do. I cannot go under 'My Computer' and view the memory card in my camera as a removable disk drive.

I am using Windows XP Home Edition and I have plenty of memory and disk space and all that junk. I really don't understand why such a small thing is getting in the way of my photography!! Quite annoying really...

Is there a site which allows me to download the D40X driver? Nikon hasn't really updated their site yet, and I can't find another site anywhere on the net.

I appreciate all of you guys' help, because it stinks to spend almost a grand on a camera and not be able to get it on your computer, haha :) Thanks again!

I can't find anything relating to specific D40X drivers on the web but the camera should show up as a removable drive. You are switching the camera on after connection, aren't you?

The easiest way to overcome that problem is to buy an external usb card reader. You put your memory card into the reader then drag n drop the files where you want them. I’ve been using one for about three years without any problems and they cost next to nothing now.

Alright, so I'm becoming more and more increasingly depressed..

I am switching the Camera on, the "Connecting to PC" comes up on the camera monitor. I'm getting the same "Found New Hardware" dialog box, but it is still trying to find a driver. PictureProject is supposed to just pop up a transfer box immediately after connecting, but that's not happening. I've tried reinstalling it about 5 times now, and I get the same thing everytime. It works fine on my laptop so I know the camera isn't at fault. I may need to take this to a computer forum?

Robert, I tried using my mother's external usb card reader. She has the Digital Concepts SD/ MMC Reader/Writer (CR-35M). After it did not work the first time, I found the driver online, installed, and still no luck.

I have no clue what to do !!! :( Mojave sad.

Thanks guys for your help, and if you do have any suggestions please continue posting! This has really been driving me nuts lately.

I thought I had the answer until you mentioned your lack of success with your mothers hub. When I got my D80 I installed all the software then about 10 minutes later I uninstalled Picture Perfect. I had some kind of problem as I recall but not accurately. I just went back to using the Device Detector built-in to ACDSee Pro and I've had no problems since.

Sorry Gordon, I'm unfamiliar with ACDSee Pro. Is it a program I can download?

You are having trouble with both the usb cable connection and the external reader. I think the problem is to do with your OS usb driver.

I suggest you install the latest chipset drivers to suit your mainboard. They are the drivers that allow the usb ports to work properly on Intel systems. Sis chipsets have a separate usb driver, which is available from your mainboard manufacturer.

It's not free I'm afraid, unless you know where to go anyway. What I was referring to was that I used A N Other program to open the files. Do you have PS installed? Or PSP? Anything really. However, does the USB card reader work when you leave it connected to your mothers' computer? If so, then Trisbert is correct.

Given that this thread is three years old I'd hope he'd have solved the issue by now! :-)
