C-index Comparison & Comments

Hello All:

I'm very new to Caedes and I'm still learning my way around, but the whole c-index thing is very confusing. I have two posts..."Of Ages Past" (c-index 32) and "Upside Down" (c-index 38) that are different ends of the spectrum, I believe.

"Of Ages Past" had some lighting issues, which I believe were fairly indicated in the c-index, but "Upsided Down", in my not so professional or experienced opinion, was much better. Why is the score for "Upside Down" so low?

Any and all constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Thanks...Chris

"of ages past", to me, looks like a snapshot. it's a cool subject, but the photo itself could've been better. That'll come with time and lots (and lots) of practice ;-)

As for "upside down", you'reoff to an excellent start there. I too didn't know it was indeed upside down untilI read your comments. There's a few issues with it, though, which are correctable.

First, while I likethe 50/50 horizontal split, the bridge feels too close to the mid-vertical point. lose either the left or right tree "border" (I'd remove the one on the right) and this will give the bridge a bit more of a dramatic departure from the foreground. Also, this seems a bit over-exposed. If you have an editing software, try reducing the brightnessa a little bit.

Hope that helped

...Of Ages Past

Upside Down

I agree with Rob's assessment

Story Time:

Back in the sixties\seventies they made a bunch of road race movies with a large cast of stars for the time .. I forget the names of the movies .. oh well .. in one of them, an Italian race car driver got into his car and immediately ripped the rear view mirror off and threw it out of the car, saying .. "wotsa behind me don't a matter"

that is what you should do with the c-index

"that is what you should do with the c-index"

excellent advice, because sadly, the voting process is broken, and those that can, refuse to fix it. your work is subject to the opinions, whims, and whatever else have you of people who probably have no clue about what they're voting on. Worse, they don't want one. If anything, certain voters should have their pc's unplugged, and fed to them...the wrong way up ;-)

imagine how you'd feel, if you'd gotten those scores on:

this

or this

Gents:

Thank you for your comments...most instructive. And, while I can play with brightness and contrasts, I have yet to learn the skill required to "lose a tree"...lol. That, I fear, may take some time.

As for the c-index...if it's that irrelevant, except for determining where images "stand or rank" within top level galleries, why not just hide it, but still use it as its used now?

Speaking for new folks...although I like my photos, or post them for instructional feedback to improve, it's very easy to get rapped up in the c-index.

I'll continue to work at it and try to incorporate your comments into future posts. BTW, what exactly is the definition of a "snapshot".

Thanks...Chris

Hi Chris,
Sorry, I should've been more specific. When I suggested "losing a tree" I meant to crop the photo so as to remove it from the frame (the entire space of the image, is referred to as a "frame").

I'm going to back off of any further input on the C-index. been there, done that..and I'll just get cranky again...

Your question as to what constitutes a snapshot, is an excellent one. The term is tossed around quite often, including by me, and I'm not sure a definition is/was offered anywhere. If it is, someone correct me, and link to it, please.

As far as I can say, a snapshot is a photo casually taken, without much,or any thought in it's formation, composition or make-up. An example would be "oh, this looks cool, nice, etc. I'll take a shot of it to show my buddies, family, etc. *click* " It often has little or no artistic merit, and while meaningful to the person who took it, no somuch so to anyone else.

how's that? :o)

well .. my advice about the c-index was because you are new .. (*quick save*) ...

post & read, post & read .. after a while you will learn a few tricks, including removing trees .. but most importantly, what to post .. as I have said MANY times, this is a wallpaper site first, art second (though, it is evolving somewhat) .. and, I assume, most people are passing judgment based on that criteria
