Why would you sell superior glass to buy inferior ?
And the point of having a dslr is being able to change your lens to what suits the occasion .
Vr or IS is useful but it doesn't replace fast glas for action shots which freeze motion and give you that blurred background .
Anyway , just my 2 cents .

having used and seen results from both lenses the 70-200 is crisper and the out of focus areas are much nicer looking. The reason i bought the 70-200 was for the speed. The handhold ability came second. If you want to do some action stuff the 18-200 wont cut it. You need to be able to freeze the action and in indoor light you need those extra stops. No amount of vr will help you.
But you do need to take into consideration what you are going to do most often. If you'd rather have one lens that covers everything get the 18-200. You will hardly have to change lenses. Its also half the price. You just don't get the same image quality and speed.
