A few weeks ago my computer died.. to cut a long story short.. my new computer has vista (YUK!!) and i have installed my hard drive from my other computer as an external so that I could use the things i have on there.. now for the problem....
I cant open any pics from there and it wont let me transfer them from the old hard drive to the new one.. it keeps telling me i'm not authorised to do it... i'm the administrator for heavens sakes.. i'm queen of the computer.. lol... what am i doing wrong.. I need to get something off there and i cant *sob sob...
so any help would be helpful.. and as i'm not computer literate (as some of you know.. lol) the simpler the steps the better.. *computers and I don't get along very well technically....
Those *&$%# security messages used to drive me nuts... Mac has them too but they aren't so difficult to disable... why don't they just have a big button that says "turn all security messages OFF!!!!!"

->Start ->Command "sysdm.cpl" ->Advanced ->Error report ->Disable
Sorry Jacqueline, nothing to do with your problem...
Jacq, your first mistake was to run Vista. That being said...can you read the external drive at all? If not, you may have to switch it to a slave and set your BIOS. If you CAN read it, then perhaps a simple partitioning will make it read. I found an article...and am too tired right now to make a link, so just copy/paste (I need a vacation from my vacation!)...
edit...
nevermind, here's a link...

Try Going to www.webuser.co.uk they have all the available lists of web sites that have programs that can retreive any image off a hard drive.You might have to go into their archives to find them though,also check out their forum.
I hope this helps Jacqueline;
Permissions - Since users now have limited access by default, access to some files and folders often have to be enabled manually either to allow access, period, or to allow access without a User Account Control (UAC) prompt. Users will probably need to do this for external hard drives. It is accomplished by right clicking the object in question -> Properties -> Security. Depending on how many files you have on the drive, you may have to wait a while as the OS changes the permissions settings on each one. Doing so for a 250GB USB2.0 drive takes a couple minutes, but is a lot better than having to go through a UAC prompt for nearly every operation within Explorer.
In rare cases, you may also have to grant yourself ownership of a particular folder. To do so, click "Advanced" on the Security tab -> Owner -> Edit.
Now there might be one caveat ... these are not the links that I originally came across, and I do recall the possibility of having to install the Windows Easy Transfer Utility on both drives, if I am recollecting correctly. The first link makes mention of this as well.
And without the purchase of that 'transfer cable' that Randy makes mention of. (Pretty sure on that as well.)
Let me/us know ... and I will hunt that link down for you if need be.
It's allll possible though. No worries Sheila. :o)
ummm.. that sounds pretty easy to do.. BUT... i don't have my old computer, I only have the hard drive which is now an external hard drive which i can attach to this computer..
Here's what you do .. Have I ever steered you wrong?
sit quietly in the corner of the darkened room .. and say:
Bill? .. Mr. Gates? .. Sir? .. I know you can hear me, I know that windows VISTA is nothing more than a MALWARE SPYBOT .. could you PLEASE humor me this one time and tell me how to fix my...er, I mean YOUR machine .. I'm sorry, Sir, I didn't mean to imply that, JUST BECAUSE I PAID FOR IT, makes it my machine, when we all know it would be nothing without YOUR GLORIOUS operating system .. Yes Sir, I won't make that mistake again ... please, Sir .. look at it this way, how can you spy on me, and my goings on, if I am unhappy using YOUR computer ... I await your answer, your humble servant
Without the benefit of firing on all cylinders at the moment (yeah, yeah ... I hear you ... at the moment Les? :oP) ...
Can you not place the Vista install CD in your new pc, and then select your old HDD, the external one ... and install the Windows Easy Transfer Utility onto your old HDD, the external one ... and then proceed as outlined?
Something tells me that something about 'permissions' is going to surface once again.
But ... but ... don't tell me that.
Give'er a go, and report back, if for nothing else ... our shared amusement. :oP
It goes through the steps involved and I quote part of it here:
"If you select the External hard disk or shared network folder option, Vista will ask for a folder on an external hard drive or a network share where the installation files will be stored. Under this newly created folder will be a autorun.inf file and another folder called MigWiz. To start the setup open the MigWiz folder and double-click on the Migsetup.exe file."
... to install the Windows utility onto your external HDD.
Ditto. Inquiring minds want to know. As I am sure that some of my friends will soon be acquiring the new operating system. I receive at least two calls a week, from my neighbors and friends, pleading that I come over to fix their computers. Shh...don't tell anyone, but on a couple of those occasions the only "fix" that was needed, was to plug something in...lol I have been contemplating a purchase of a new PC with Vista, so it would be helpful to know what the work around is for the dilemma you are in. No hurry though :)
*notices that all of his ... ahem ... finger tapping from patiently waiting for Jacquelines' response ... is starting to wear down the veneer on his desk*
ooops... i'm sorry... i've just been a bit busy with family (a crazy time at the moment..) and haven't even had a chance to check it out... as soon as i'm allowed 5 mins without someone wanting something i'll let you know... i'm on and off here just keep an eye on Keith & Les to make sure they are behaving themselves and are sharing the cookies.. ;)
I cant open any pics from there and it wont let me transfer them from the old hard drive to the new one.. it keeps telling me i'm not authorised to do it... i'm the administrator for heavens sakes.. i'm queen of the computer.. lol... what am i doing wrong..
