Snapshot City

It could just be me getting old and cranky, but of late it seems like the signal to noise ratio of images in the voting booth has got significantly worse. Not so long ago I'd go through ten images and see some really nice images. The odd 9 or 10, some really strong 8's. There were snapshots, but they were an entertaining diversion.

More recently it seems to be a rare treat to give out a score over 5. In my mind I've had to redefine 0 to mean "how did that get on here?"

Has anyone else noticed this trend towards posts featuring holiday pictures from disposable APS cameras that were dropped in someone's pint before being dried in the oven and developed?

Replies to this topic by people that saw some horrors in the VB that turned out to be mine are positively encouraged ;)

Well, it was decided by the Aediles and Praetors to allow most images unless they are in blatant violation of the CoC (code of conduct).

Images viewed as "partial snapshots" will be archived after about 1 month.

True snapshots will be deleted when a Praetor discovers them, after the image has been on the site for at least one week.

We didn't all suddenly go bonkers. There is method to the madness. This was done to allow new people to get feedback on the images and allow them to improve.

So it's basically survival of the fittest. The only way that the situation would improve is that people moderate their own images and only upload the best of their best shots, and not use the site as an image sharing site.

Aha, I see. In that case I'm being a bad member by being hasty in rushing through to upload instead of taking the time to feedback on some of those images. Thanks for the information.

Well, getting people to post actual constructive criticism on the images is still a challenge. Most members tend to sugarcoat it and create a false impression of what a good image is.

There's some very poor images doing the round where loads of people have given it very positive comments... and those who actually posted some tips and advice are ignored. Oh well, that's life.

Perhaps what we need is a voting booth where we can rate comments on a 0 to 10 sca....

:D

Well, the first step in improving your photography skills is to accept the fact that you aren't as good as:
a) Your friends/family/strangers tell you, you are.
b) You think you are.

Once you realize this, then you can set out in your quest for photographic perfection by constantly trying to improve your photos... and actively listening to critiques from more experience people. Without viewing their comments as personal attacks... or randomly spouted rubbish.
