That's fine with me as long as my desktop computer is a server. =P

I only have a windows partition (Win98) for playing games and using Photoshop (damn you Adobe!)

I've decided to begin a barage of hate mail directed at adobe until they release a version of p/s for linux. I know they fear open-source and all, but linux is quickly growing in popularity as the o/s of choice.

I played with Red Hat for about a week, 3 years ago, until I decided it took too much room on a small laptop drive, tried to reinstall on a smaller partition, and had it hose my MBR (thank you, 1024 cylinder limit). I've heard that's been cleared up for awhile, but I still wanted to give it a dedicated drive. Now I want to wait until I get that particular laptop back from a friend, who had both (or at least parts of both) of his machines fry from a lightning storm. Depending on what happens with my other machines, I'll probably clear windows from that and go with slackware.

I popped Knoppix in another machine the other day; lots of fun. But I really want to get something dedicated, that'll just sit on the harddrive, and run, and keep running without interruption or crashing. :-D

My desktop at home has Mandrake 9 and my home server has redhat 7.3. My desktop at work has Redhat 9 and most of my servers have either RH 7.2 or RH 9.

unlike nasty windows, u can get almost any version of linux for FREE...F-R-E-E! yup, Red Hat Linux 9 is very good and that is free, (if u cant buy it free i know it comes free with books, but it is probably free by it self)... i belive the only Linux's u have to pay for are the server editions...which is still much cheaper than windows Server 2003...

WN: 'best' in what way?

All distros have good and bad parts. I'd suggest just getting Redhat or Mandrake if you've never used Linux or Unix before. After you knaw on that for a while you can look into others like Slackware or Gentoo.

might i add. Not only is the software free, but the programs that come with it add up well into the $1,000ands of dollars, so now tell me where better deal is? lol, of course i use windows myself cuz its a bit "easier" and i would say more compatible, but that is not true anymore as u can easily run and software in linux.

I don't understand peepl when they say they have problems with there comp... I like never had any.... Windows xp is the best... Only froze like 5 times sins like 2-3 year.... And 3 of those time where just cuz it was thinking really hard and I didn't feel like waiting so I just reastarted it.... If you don't cause ur comp problems there won't be any problems unless ur unlucky enouf to find a bug. Also make sure u upgrade windows using windows update.

Anymore, unless a company has corporationalized their product by integrating everything (most common in laptops - especially Gateway and Vaio), one computer brand is just as good as another of the same OS. All the important components are made by other companies and it is a combination of certain component performances that make one computer better than another. personally, I'm with tb - build your own; a computer just works better if it has that bonding time with it's owner :-P

hey. i'm new with the whole OS thing. i got a dell laptop and its got XP with just a few freeze up (and like DJDK, i just got annoyed and hit power). i would like to eventually build my own desktop but i have no idea how i would even get started or how to put it together. is something like this possible for me if i'm a little technically saavy? and is linux similar to windows in anyway or even mac? i don't like mac much, but.... i just have no idea. what the crap should i do?

Building a computer isn't hard, the only hard part is plugging the power button into motherboard, but the motherboard manual tells you what to do. I just built my computer, and it was a breeze. =D

I must admit I haven't tried Linux yet. Will do so soon though. Windows XP is the best MS OS by far and essentially if you are a gamer than there is not really much of an option other than Windows. For everything else Linux seems to be tops.

WN: I say that putting the heatsink on the cpu is the hardest thing about building your own computer. With those sinks that require to to press all your weight down on the motherboard with a screw driver. One slip and the motherboard has a big hole in it!

I'll take your word for it, but mine didn't have a heatsink on it, it had a fan.

It HAS to have a heatsink on it. That's the metal thing that the fan is connected to. It increases the surface area over which the cpu can disipate heat so that the fan can more easily blow it away.

it isn't win vs linux... it is corprate vs. user... i build PC's! It's a symphony of parts and software. not a dell made, or hp. find it in yourself to really know your own pc. not a machine. then you won't ask windows or linux... build the best and they don't crash, they are a user built, and only can handle what they are intended for, not overclocking or propritary thing-amajigs.

I couldn't agree more with caedes. The most difficult part is definitely putting on the heatsink and fan. Just one mistake and you either need a new motherboard or CPU. It's the only thing I dread to do.

Ntek also has a point. If the components of a system is carefully selected (not grey market stuff) you should have no problems with your system no matter what software you run. Each part of my 2 PC's were specifically chosen by me, and I can truly say that I haven't had one problem yet.

i don't think i put much into software on my pc most of it is black copy...so you could say that i own a windows base at the price of linux... and yeah it works. i like to donate my money to that, that is'nt already wealthy. this site it one of the things that is worth investing in. and i will continue to do so. but not MS or bill. but i still use Microsoft just becouse they are good.

Ok, I might have oversimplified my statement. Software does make a difference, but if there is inherent hardware problems no matter what software you use, you'll most likely have loads of problems. (Ever tried to find good drivers for no-name brands?)

It also depends on what you do with it. At the moment the best MS OS is Win XP (Pro). With Win 98SE it almost got routine to do a re-install every 6 months just to avoid most problems (Joking! But Win98SE isn't very great.)

WinterNight- I see the heatsink on your's, under the CPU fan. It is that aluminum piece with the fins that the CPU fan attaches to.
No case fans in the back of your machine to remove the hot air? Or was the photo taken as you were building it and just hadn't installed them yet?

It can't hurt, New ones only cost $10. The more air you move out, the cooler it will stay, and CPUs run better at cooler temps. Heat build-up can ruin electronics.
