I don't want to be a pain, but the Abstract gallery is glutted with Fractals. I just now noticed how bad it is. It wasn't always this way, either, it used to be almost all fractals were in the Fractal gallery. Maybe the line between the Fractal and Abstract is clear, and I know that images are generally moved to the permanent gallery that the artist uploaded it to in the first place-- I think a lot of them need to be in the Fractal gallery and not Abstract. Of the digital work done on the site, I'd say half should be in Fractals if not more, and then the other half divided between Abstract and the other Computer galleries. The fact is there are very few true digi artists on this site aside from those who do work with fractals (we have so real fractal masters) but the galleries don't reflect that.
Agreed, we should make a point of putting all fractal images in the fractal gallery since they have a specific gallery. We should also consider cutting down on the number of fractals in the permanent gallery. I see too many mediocre and repeat images there.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
I went through the computer gallery and moved alot of the fractals into the correct place, but that was a while ago (same time removed the "other" gallery if you can remember that). Once I get back home and have time I will do so again, unless one of the other mods beats me to it.
If I upload a fractal that I have created without any tweaking of any kind, I upload it to the fractals gallery. Most of my "abstracts" are actually cross-program creations. About 50% (or less) of the original fractal remains after playing with it in something like PS or PSP for several hours (days, in some cases). Without a cross-program gallery, I never know where to put them. If I put them in the fractals gallery I sometimes get complaining PM's from "purists" who say that I'm cheating; if I put them in the abstracts gallery I get complaints from the other direction. I'll be happy to do whatever anyone would like if I only knew what that was. :)
Perhaps others are having a similar problem with which gallery to designate???
I have always thought the best way to decide is, just think where you would look for it if you were trying to find it again. Simplistic perhaps, but effective. :-)
I personaly have a hard time figuring out which to put mine in.Just how much manipulation of a fractal becomes abstract. If someone could set guide lines
it would be a lot easier to distinguish between the two.I know this comment appears to be a little air headed but what sets the two apart?
I think the guideline should be something like, if the fractal is the centerpiece, and is still easily recognizable as a fractal, then it doesn't matter if you edited it, it should be in "Fractals". Which would include lots of the current "Abstract" images.
Thanks for that clear and concise "definition", Bob! In the hopes that caedes will agree with you, I'm going to move some of my images from abstracts to fractals right now, since I have always felt that's where some of them belonged. Thanks again!!! :)
Oh my goodness!!!! I just went to move some images as mentioned above and discovered there is now a gallery named abstract->fractal. I do believe our Fearless Leader has just solved one of my major problems. THANKS!!! :)
Hi, Nicky -- Tierazon is a fractal program, so would be considered a fractal IMHO, or -- if you do a lot of tweaking in PS or something as Bob described a few posts above -- it might then be considered an abstract->fractal. At least that's the way I understand it. :)
well if you really wanted to be technical...or just difficult all fractals are abstract =P
however, the way reddawg does it about how I see 'the change' too.
Oh--- I just noticed a problem with making just an Abstract->Fractal gallery-- there's no way to not view the Fractals, as in the images that are just "Abstract". So you still see all the fractals if you click on Abstract.
well i do mostly images with fractal flames... they are considered fractals but even a plain one without manipulation wouldn't usually be thought of as a "fractal"... most of what i make seem like abstracts, so am i right with just putting them into the abstract gallery?
I thought you might say that... the way I look at it is, if the end result is generated by computer, then it belongs in the computer gallery. If you do some manual editing on it afterward, then it goes in abstract. But I have never made any fractals, it's just an opinion.
