Resizing images for upload

I've uploaded a few images to the site already without a problem - they have all been from point and shoot cameras. However, I just received my new Nikon D40 a few days ago and get an image size error from Caedes. As far as managing photo files goes, I am pretty clueless... normally I just uploaded them to a folder and never edited or anything. So can someone tell me how to size the image properly to allow upload? I did not find anything obvious on the PictureProject software that came with the camera. Thanks

Well, what format are the current files in?

If I recall correctly the site would allow JPEG/PNG files with a resolution of up to 3000x3000.

Camera says high quality jpeg. Pictureproject says 3008x2000. None of them have been cropped etc...
edit: nice link in your signature, btw.

I think it's that 3008 pixels that's the culprit. You need to resize the image to something lower than 3000x3000. I don't know how the PictureProject software works, but it should have some ability to resize the image. All you need to do then is to resize it to 3000 x 1995 or you could try 1600x1200 and see if that works.

Alternatively you can download Irfanview. It should allow you to resize the images easily.

Thanks, I'll check out both options... The pictureproject software did come with a help disc - the resize feature may be harder to find than expected so I will consult the disc before trying Irfanview.

the concept will be the same for any program

1) .. make sure that "maintain aspect ratio" is checked (or however they word it)

2) .. change the dimension of ONE side and allow the other to be changed automatically "to maintain aspect ratio"

3) .. then save your new copy with a different name\location .. in order to leave your original untouched .. it's a good idea to NEVER save over your original .. post processing may look good to you at the moment .. but may bother you in the long-run

I used the Irfanview and it worked very well, easy to use. Thanks for the tip... Basically I will only resize photos I plan to upload to the site. Do you think going from 3008x2000 to 3000 x 2995 will have any real effect on the picture? Once again, this is something I know little about, but it sounds like this is a small change that would be difficult to notice. Thanks for the help

no, for the most part .. a possibility that some sharpness could be applied (shift + s)

but, if you have "picture1" .. and you name the resized copy "picture1a" .. you can use irfanview to flip back and forth between them .. and look for image degradation

I'll even allow you to use those names .. for a small fee
