Photography, but not as a spectator?

I see all sorts of beautiful action shots of the sports I love, they are everywhere. Pictures of skiers, bikers, boarders, pretty much any sport, there are excellent shots. Im guessing that most of the people taking these shots have some background in the sport they are shooting. The question is how are people mixing these hobbies? I saw an excellent shot taken BY a longboarder of the front of his board and the pavement ahead and just wondered what exactly he was there to do, did he go out there with his board to explicitely take shots or are his two interests just combining naturally. I love photography but find that, for me as a beginner, it dominates the activities of the day if Im carrying the camera around. I was wondering how everybody else felt about this... How they combine photography with the other hobbies they enjoy.

I once created a bracket to attach my camera to a beer can

wide angle lens, set a slow shutter and voila!! .. action shot

this is what you mean?

:o)

I've seen cameras attached to bicycle handle bars, facing back at the rider, nightime shot with city lights squiggling behind him

but .. other sports would be difficult .. football, for example .. the liability insurance alone would kill you, you know, in case your camera injured somebody's endorsement face

For me, the surfing example fits. I love surfing as well as photography and some day I think I want to combine the two. If you take some time to look around, you can find some really interesting perspectives of surfers, curling waves, underwater shots, etc.

But, one of my other hobbies is hiking, which really goes hand in hand with photography. I love to go to new and different places and I'm always so excited to come home and get my camera plugged in to the computer to see what I managed to bring back. Also, travel goes hand in hand with photography for the same reasons.

Sorry to all...I haven't been commenting as much as I would like to lately. I'm a 9 to 5er again (actually more like 8:15 to 7:30 these days!!) Don't worry, I still see all of your wonderful posts, if only for a second.
