Not so sunny ....

Obviously not the artwork of the week, but I thought the sunshine captured was not so bad - sunshine was supposed to be the subject - not the blossoms. And, no, I did not just point the camera and shoot wildly, believe it or not I used a tripod for this, oh my goodness yes - that is 2 times used now lol
Anyway, it scored 40 - and the voters who considered it worth 40 did not tell me why - the comments I received suggested it is better than 40. I think it deserves more than 40 but of course I am slightly biased.
So please, is anyone willing to tell me where it fails - how it could have been improved, or even just tells me it stinks - I can take it, I have my tissues on hand :)

I'd like to see you experiment with having some of your leaves and petals extend out of the frame, it adds quite a bit of dimensionality to it. Just takes a little practice and planning ... of course, the "extending out of the framework flamers" will come out of the woodwork and call for your dismissal .. but they're not very vocal and can be driven back if all of the "extending embracers" show up on that day.

My only issue with it is the square cropping .. but I'm a card carrying "square cropper complainer" .. so, it's a union thing with me .. nothing personal

Creative Framing Technique ... I haven't worked thru this method, and am not endorsing this method .. but, just throwing it out there for your indigestion

Thanks K
I have in the past created "petals out of the frame' images. It is an effect I am paticularly fond of. However, my mehod is painstaking -either 'painting' the petals after the frame is added or isolating the extensions and then adding the frame with the boundaries of the image. If that make not much sense then I am not surprised. Thanks for the tutorial link - I will study it but have already seen the dreaded 'L' word there - I have never been able to create a layered image - I suffer from a layering allergy and come out in a cold sweat just reading the word.
I take your point about the square cropping - not everyones cup of tea but I selfishly made this to fit my own desktop with room either side for icons.
I may have another play with the image and give it a change of look.

In photoshop, when I have done it, I just selected a circle around the leaf areas I was going to do and "copy to new layer" (ctrl+J) .. then move these layers to a position above the frame .. and erased that which surrounded the leaf tip and was not needed

at least, that's how I remember it

I was terrified of the layer word as well .. I didn't understand it at first

Lyn, you should know by now that I really like a lot of the images you've posted.

I'm sorry, my dear friend, this isn't one of them. It's not bad, per se, just that it doesn't do anythng for me. I'm feeling the absence of a focal point, and overall, the frame feels a bit crowded.

On the upside, it is nice and sharp, and the colors are nice and vibrant, without being blown out. Perhaps a tighter crop, showing the sun's glorious light on say, a few (hundred :P) less blossoms?

Hopefully this helps, if nothing else, to shed a little light (bad pun, sorry) on what the silent voters saw, or thought?

It feels a bit busy Lyn. I think a tighter crop would do a lot to improve this image. Something with three to five flowers would take the "busy" away and reduce some of the contrast.

Thanks Guys - have had another go at it -cropped, cloned, pushed and smudged sharpened clarified faded filtered and framed to within an inch of its life :) Down to 5 blooms :) Now I don't know whether it is better or worse lol
I will post it later and find out.
