I was thinking that it would be possible for me to run caedes.net off of my workstation that I have here at work (at least temporarily). It's a dual athlon 2000 with a gig of ram, so it would most likely be very fast, however the network here isn't as reliable as the one at the datacenter. Does this sound like a good tradeoff?
How does your company feel about using their bandwidth? Unless you're the boss, someone may have a problem with it. Even if you can, is the connection as fast? You may go from one bottleneck to another. Maybe try redirecting the dev page to it first, organize a few people to hit it as hard as they can, and see what happens... :-D
I've lacked broadband all summer, so it's sort of a treat to have fast access again. I guess I'm a little more tolerant of slowness.
My workstation is on a University network, so the bandwidth isn't going to be a problem, and I think I can probably claim that it's for an intelectual pursuit or something (universities always fall for that). I think this use is much more legitimate than Kazaa, plus we already have so many webservers on the network just in our departement. I seriously doubt if anyone would even notice. I only say that the network is more unreliable because I'm comparing it to a datacenter. It's still a redundant OC-*insert high integer* with backup T1's over a 100Mbit switched network.
The only thing I can't figure out is why the current server is having so much trouble. I did some benchmarks on my dev server at home (a Pentium 233MMX) and I could server about 30 pages a minute with it. When I used mod_perl it went up to about 100 pages a minute. Assuming a linear scale we should be getting around 160 ppm with CGI. I think memory could passibly be an issue. Fortunately the new server has a gig of ram as compared to the current 512 Megs.
Righ now there are 53 users logged on I think this might be the reason for the slow down.I dont ever remeber this many people logged on at the same time before. Can you add more ram to the server? If so what kind does it take?I had 1.5gigs in this machine but one slot screwed up and I have an extra 512 megs .
I think I've seen around 70 members or so. I tweaked a few settings on the server to save some RAM, so it's doing better, but when we move most of the speed problems should be gone. Sorry I can't use the RAM because we lease the server. We don't actually have control over the hardware.
The hard, cold reality of this situation is that it boils down to money. Nice thoughts, good vibrations and touch-feely notwithstanding, we who participate in this site must contribute to Caedes so that he can upgrade to where we want this site to be. All else is bluster.
May I recommend $5.00 per month or $50.00 per year for those who wish to post, critique or download photos.
Ummm... I tend to agree with DJDK. I have hardly been doing anything here for the past month because it is torture to use this site now. Before that I would click on a page and BAM it was there (or pretty close to that ;-) and now it takes about 5 mins just to browse through 2-3 pictures. =( There's all this talk about getting a faster server, but when is this going to happen?
