Input on portrait shot please

I rarely have time to visit the discussion board, but I would like input on a recent shot of mine First Tooth I don't fill my gallery with personal shots, but I have seen portrait shots that I really enjoy here on Caedes. Metpin does some very nice ones, for example. I thought this was a worthwhile shot - of a moment that is memorable to many - to post and I've been so disappointed to see the score it has received - the lowest in my gallery. I'm wondering if portraits are taboo on here or if there is a glaring fault that I'm missing. I'd really appreciate some input and good constructive criticism. Be gentle - I put a lot of my heart into that one. Thanks.

From a wallpaper point-of-view .. the reasons are easy to determine ... people have a hard time embracing a snapshot of somebody else's child on their computer desktop .. and it IS a snapshot and not encouraged by the site .. they are allowed, grudgingly, so that you may share your joy with the friends you have made here

the image comes up in the VB, the voter thinks "why would I want this on my screen?", and votes accordingly

you should expect this for this type of shot, and not let the score shake your faith .. as darling as the image is to YOU, the rest of us will NOT connect to it on the same level, not even close

now .. if you were to put more artistic effort into the composition, exposure, design, costumery ... it might compete on a different level .. but some will always see it as a picture of somebody else's cherub

How does one differentiate between a snapshot and artistic? I did put quite a bit of effort into the latter, but perhaps I shouldn't admit that. It apparently doesn't show.

I would be happier if you could separate yourself from the subject matter of this particular image .. even that it IS a child ... and judge the image on its technical aspects

there are several determining factors that make an image a snapshot .. family & pet subjects, an unfortunate use of 'in-your-face" flash, a lack of artistic planning (ie: household backdrop)

this is probably going to be a no-win situation .. but .. Let's compare similar shots .. my apologies to Steven for using his image

Ole Blue Eyes .. by metpin777

Steven's use of natural, ambient light .. the soft bokeh background, the color provided by the outfit, the steely-eyed, piercing gaze combined with his post-processing efforts .. make this image more worthy of the score it received.

please understand that I understand why you posted the image . and why I approved the image ... I also understand the score

I do appreciate the input on this one and don't mean to seem like I don't. That's what I wanted to hear when I started this discussion. The voting logic baffles me sometimes, though. I don't use fractals on my desktop, but I don't vote them low just because of that. Anyway, thanks for stepping in and giving me your thoughts. I truly didn't view this as a snapshot or I never would have submitted it.
