Just in the last couple of days I've been having a problem with the images offered by the server. If I left-click on a picture, the server provides the larger image but chops off about one-sixth of the righthand side of the picture. If the image has a border, quite often the righthand edge of the image is there but the border is lost. Anybody else noticed this? Clicking on a different size from the range of options offered doesn't seem to make any difference - still the righthand one-sixth is lost.
I'm guessing this is due to the full size image being opened in your browser window is larger than your browser window itself, so the right edge goes out of the screen.
Try saving the file (right-clicking on the image and "save as") and see if the image is indeed missing a section.
Also make sure that the image is the right resolution for your PC. A larger resolution would definitely look like a bit has disappeared since your PC won't be able to show the full size at once.
No, it's not due to the image being too large for my screen. Even the smallest size available - far short of the boundaries of my screen - has the same problem. I'm using Firefox as my browser, on Windows.
I've just tried Opera instead of Firefox - and no problem at all! Yet Firefox is still continuing to exhibit the same problem. How strange... it's always worked perfectly up till just two or three days ago. And yet as far as I'm aware, there haven't been any changes in Firefox in the last few days. Has some code been changed on Caedes in the last few days? Well, no matter, the answer is clearly to use Opera, at least for the time being.
Well, I'm using Firefox and I haven't encountered the same problem. Perhaps you should download and install the latest version of Firefox and see if that solves the problem.
Thanks Mimi, but I've still got this same problem, even after clearing the cache and the cookies. I'll use Opera for the time being and try Firefox again after the next version is released.
try this .. look at your Firefox .. tools\options\advanced\general tab
[x] always use cursor keys to navigate within pages
make sure this is UNCHECKED
also, if necessary .. when the image is loaded completely .. right click and select "view image" .. this will 'shrink' the image to fit your screen AND give you a little magnifying glass with a -\+ for shrinking\enlarging .... if the image is loaded, and in your cache, the change will be instantaneous
normally I middle-click the 1600x1200 size even though my screen is currently 1280x1024 ... this sends the image to a new TAB, instead of opening a new WINDOW ... with the above 'feature' unchecked (by default) .. I get scroll bars for looking at the image full size on my screen ... with the 'feature' checked .. there are NO scroll bars, and oddly, the cursor keys don't navigate the page as advertised
Well, this is all very puzzling. I looked at the "always use cursor keys..." checkbox as you suggested, Keith, but it was already unchecked. And the problem still occurs. However, thanks for your tip about rightclicking on the image once it is fully downloaded and choosing "view image". Once I do this, the image "corrects" itself to show the full photo - the missing righthand one-sixth reappears. So, I'm still baffled by the cause of the problem and its inexplicable sudden appearance, but your tip gives an easy solution to it. I shall await the next version of Firefox with interest and see if the problem is still there after that!
Thanks folks for all your help.
Cheers,
Kevin.
Do you have the same issue with another browser or just with Firefox otherwise i suggest you uninstall Firefox and reinstall it again and perhaps you won't have this issue anymore.
I'm only having this problem with Firefox, and only in the last few days. Opera is fine and Internet Explorer is okay (though I hate to use it). I could reinstall Firefox, but I'm happy with Keith's workaround. I'm hoping that one of Firefox's periodic updates will resolve the problem - Firefox 2.0.0.7 is just around the corner.
do you dabble in firefox add-ons (extensions) .. ??
this is a long-shot .. but, it's possible a new add-on corrupted something .. if so, maybe looking at your add-on list you can "disable" some of your more recent additions .. closing firefox, and restarting
or .. another long-shot (one I am not recommending, except as a last resort) .. your profile has been corrupted .. changing profiles will lose your downloaded addons AND your bookmarks .. but bookmarks are stored in HTML form and can be easily re-imported into the new profile .. look for this file in your:
C:\docs\KEVIN\application data\mozilla\firefox\profiles\*** (whatever the current profile is called)
then, in your NEW profile .. re-import via the Bookmarks\Organize Bookmarks ... "import" (in the file menu)
also .. when DL'ing add-ons .. if you DL the .xpi file to a folder, (rather than let firefox install from web) .. you can re-establish all of your installed modifications without hunting them down ... just open your add-on window in firefox and drag-and-drop the .xpi file to the window
the new Firefox just intalled for me .. that "view image" feature now seems to give you all kinds of sizes and aspect ratios .. I don't remember it doing that before
maybe I should read the new features list before I close it
Thanks Keith. I too now have Firefox 2.0.0.7 but I still have the same issue when opening images. I've checked out the link you gave to Mozilla's instructions about Profiles, but I'm very wary about altering things in case I make a mistake: I note the warning there about the possibility of losing a whole directory! I think I'll leave it as it is; I can live with this slight quirk in Firefox, or simply use Opera instead. But thanks one and all for all the comments I've received - I'm impressed by the level of expertise there is around me!
Cheers,
Kevin.
I may be lazy, but I can manage to use my own power to scroll a page ... and if it's a big page, I'll hire somebody to scroll for me according to my instructions (or I won't pay 'em)
I will admit Firefox can be a pain in the behind at times.
It has cookie issues sometimes..it can slow for no reason etc etc
But I've not had this issue..all I can (lamely) think of is checking all the settings to make sure they correspond etc
Sometimes I do consider leaping over to Opera myself..I've always loved FF but I am warming more and more to Opera ><
I've already seen this here and there but i don't know more about memory issues but of course it's not in general, anyway Firefox can behave differently according to the users, some will have more issues with it than others and eventhough Firefox is a good and secure browser.
Hi again,
I've tried your suggestion, Keith, to uncheck the auto-scrolling box but it makes no difference - the righthand one-sixth of portrait format images is still missing, though right-clicking on them and selecting View Image does bring the missing part back. Genver - I've tried changing the options from "open image in new tab" to "open image in new window" but this too makes no difference. But thanks for the link to the advanced tweaks; I'll take a look through this and report back if anything fits the bill. It will take me a while, as I'm aware of the danger of registry tweaks and want to make sure I understand them fully before changing anything...
Cheers,
Kevin.
Sorry for the delay in responding - have been very busy!
My monitor is a 19" Benq flatscreen set for a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. There's plenty of room!
The image loads in a new window but this doesn't show the full image, even when (as usual) it's well short of the boundaries of the screen.
No scroll bars ever appear, but I have just recently discovered that the image will scroll using the arrow keys. Up till now I had thought that part of the image was cut off. If I right-click and choose View Image, the picture will re-display showing its full content.
I have also just discovered that the same problem occurs with some video clips and some image stills (e.g., on the BBC News website).
This is all when using Firefox. None of these problems happen if I use Opera.
It sems to me that for some odd reason Firefox is set to display using a pre-set small selection of length/width ratios. It follows these rigidly even when there is plenty of room for the full extent of the image to be shown; it's only overcome by clicking on the "View Image" option.
I'm baffled why Firefox is doing this now. I can't recall it ever happening six months ago or more.
I wish the good folks at Firefox would enable click-and-drag corners on the image frames, or better still provide the possibility for automatic expansion of the frame until it meets the proportions of the image (excepting only of course such times where it is bigger than the screen).
For now it looks like the best option is just to right-click for the View Image option, but if you have any still better ideas I'd be glad to hear them.
