I would be grateful for any feedback onthese twi images, Neoclassical both of which I was reasonablypleased with but have not fared well in the VB. Any suggestions as to how I could have improved them?
Please:)

If the other image you are referring to is Criterion, I think that is the better of the two. Both suffer from composition issues though which may have damaged their appeal. This is more evident in the Neoclassical shot. It’s cropped very tight with some of the building cut out altogether and this looks a little awkward with the vertical borders too. They emphasise the perspective distortion in the shot – a common problem with zoom lenses taking a wide angle shot. If you didn’t have any more in the shot it would perhaps have worked better as a more abstract architectural study by maybe just cropping a portion of the building instead and correcting the perspective distortion. In both instances – a high key monochrome option may have also better suited the subject matter than vivid colour. Just a few thoughts – hope that helps :-)

Thanks Phil , I seem to have missed out one of the links - sorry, and yes I did mean Criterion. tThe voters obviously agreed with you as to that being the (marginally)better of the two. Do you have any suggestions to impove the composition of that one? I wanted to include both long sides of the structure to emphasize the triangular shape.
Neoclassical was not taken on zoom, neither was it cropped. I did however correct the original distortion which removed a bit down each side, and I cloned out a bit of the adjoining building as well. I deliberately did not include the very lower part of the building as there was a car with a hideous tailer parked in front.THIS is a link to the original shot it you care to have a look. Maybe I should not have corrected the distortion to give it more perspective? I used a program called ShiftN to do it, which I think actually over compensated and made it look wrong.

There are several more of these limestone buildings in the area - I hope to get some more - hopefully with more success at capturing their grandeur.
I appreciate your help:)

If that is the case Lyn, I would have definitely gone for the tight crop featuring building detail and not the whole thing. Criterion is a nice building and perhaps you could have tried something totally different to emphasise the geometries such as taking a very low angle wide shot right at the front looking up. not a post job but a reshoot but something to consider as an option the next time you try something like this perhaps.

The zoom thing referred to using a zoom lens as opposed to a prime (fixed focal) wide lens.

I think it could be improved by tilting it as it is on a slight angle (both in the original and the caedes version). I also find the cropping offputting as Phil does.

I would say the "thing" on the windowsill is likely to be an old birdsnest, BTW (or, less interestingly, just a bunch of old leaves).

Thaks Sam - I tried for ages to get it straight - in PSP with the grid visible a straight line down the middle is - well, straight, but I could not get the other vertical and horizontal lines to behave.
I am going back with binoculars to investigate the 'thing' I thinks its too big for a birdsnest and leaves may have blown away. Maybe a window cleaners cloth :)
Perhaps if I enter the Criterion and stay a while I may come out with some better ideas lol

Architecture photography is a battler of a bizzo, and better left to the ankle biters

Chuck a sickie and grab a coldie

;)

you'll notice that that which is in the left window is also in the right ... so, while you can go looking for cloths, leaves and nests .. you should also keep an open mind to 'design elements' and wood moulding

because any worker lazy enough to forget a cloth is not going to leave its counterpart as well

Its too cold for a coldie here today Keith.

I must need new specs because I can not see anything on the right windowsill - I believe now the 'thing' is a Tuatara ! You may need to look that up :)
I have just tried to phone the Forrester Gallery but they are not answering - aha, someone opened the window and it crawled back in and did dire things to the occupants :)
