Charging for Portraits

I need everyone's opinion here pls!
How much would you charge to do family portraits?
I have several requests already to do more portraits but I am not sure what I should be charging! I have been just taking the photos and making the customers copies of the best shots and then making a few digitally enhanced options as well. They will pay to get their own choice of image and framing themselves!
Tks,

What is your time worth? How many hours to book, setup, shoot, get everyones attention, travel, lunches, post processing, printing (framing). $40/hr sounds good to me;-)

As for your work...if they like it, what does it matter what others think. It must be good.

Yep – know your market and charge accordingly. Pretty lucky over here as we have a franchise chain of ‘photographers’ called Venture who charges a small fortune for formulaic contemporary style portraits. They are just awful and are all usually done to the same presets and appearance but people seem prepared to pay through the nose for it. I don’t mind them at all as I can offer a better product for less money and still charge up to $500 to do a portrait or $6000 for a full wedding shoot.
