image size for portrait pictures

just wondering what image size would be best to upload at for photo's taken in portrait as their height is greater than width

Try making a new image at a standard resolution with the height dimension closest to your original image. Color this image black and paste the original over it causing black borders on the left and right. You dont have to use black, that just seems to be the most popular matt color i've seen.

No problem, looking forward to seeing more portraits on the site. This is something that I am just beginning to learn, and is perhaps more challenging and more emotionally stimulating than nature photography (tho I'll always love landscapes etc.)
