One interesting thing to point out tho, is that my next upload time is about 18hrs away from my last upload instead of 24?

It is supposed to be 1 or 2 uploads every 20 hours. We'll just try it for a week or so and see how it works.

I do really like the fact that it tells you how long you need to wait now though; and also that it tells you BEFORE you upload... it used to really annoy me when I would fill in a lengthy description for the image, find the file, choose the gallery etc and then be informed that I couldn't upload it anyway! Sometimes several times in one day...

I like the new upload limit because it allows me time to view new images & comment on many more than I previously could. I would love to spend more time at the computer, but my lifestyle just doesn't allow it! Now I know when I sit down at the end of the day or in the morning, I am not going to be faced with 8 pages of new images & feel so overwhelmed that it is easier to look at artist's name rather than photo (I hate myself when I do that.yuck! So tacky...) Anyway, thank you Caedes for the new upload limit. I hope it is working well for you beacuse it sure is working well for me!! :))

This is(or was or whatever) certainly only a temporary fix, because as the number of people on this site increase the number of images uploaded will increase and soon we'll be back to this discussion...a permanent fix is needed.

this isnt really anything meaningful, but i really like how it is now every 20h instead of 24, that way you can always go and upload one picture a day at aproximately the same time, rather than having to wait later, and later every day for your upload time.

It was quite annoying at first, but I guess it works better for more people this way. If you do change it back, don't change the hours, or at least not past 23. This site has so many technicalities and problems that are constantly being fixed, and I never knew about them before, hence I couldn't aprpeciate them. Thanks everyone :-)

First I agree with this dude stuffnstuff. Secondly Since rusty was talking about more and more people coming on the site and stuff if that has to do with this new limit then I have to say something. I find more and more people everyday that have acconts and no pics uploaded. It really bothers me because when Otacu (my cousin) introduced me to this site he said" but if you get an account make sure you put images on here because a lot of people get an account and never get back on and it waste the site's money". I took this seriously and once i figured out how to upload images i did just about everyday and as you might know i have a lot of images here on the site and i only got my camera in march 2004.
To get to the point if these people are wasting the site's money would it be posible to for like *Caedes to e-mail the people and ask if they are going to upload anything and if not caedes could delete their account.

and maybe thats what the new dev.caedes.net is to get just the people that are here to put images on.

I dont know if this is posible and i know it would be a lot of work but i think it would save money to have them gone (that is if that is why this new limit is because of need of money) ...maybe this discusstion wasnt the right to post this comment but thats what i think..

Well, Russel, that certainly would help lower the site's overload problem, but many good images would be lost, and the total amount of artwork would plummet. Just think of Joost and Lucy, and the many other great artists on the site.

A few ideas, if they haven't been mentioned before, would be to either raise the price for being in the Caedes Cadre, encourage more people to give (I am thinking of it myself), and raise the standards for images to stay on this site. I personally don't want to see all my images knocked off, but if it helps the site...

LiquidguitarJP, your worry that user's who don't upload anything somehow wastes the site's money is totall unfounded. It actually costs more (disk space) fro someone to upload an image than it does for them to have a username (which is basically free). Members who don't upload also provide a valuable service by voting on images and commenting. The real resource waste is when people upload images that no one is interested in downloading.

well perhaps put beginers on a smaller upload limit than the more experienced people
eg .. someone like myself would be limited to a smaller number of uploads until i reached a certain standard ... after all my view is that someone of my standard would learn more and be enticed to work harder if i knew that i could only upload "x" number of images until my standard was at the acceptable level .... the trouble is i do not know what my standard is until i receive feedback from posted images. it also might encourage the better artists in here to comment on more images..... i have had fantastic feedback from other members on my images (which i am grateful for), but with the huge numbers of images new in here every day i can understand the time it would take to look at and comment on every one.

I just think it is a bummer for people such as myself not to be able to upload at least 2 pictures. I recently tried to upload a 2nd photo and was denied and told to wait 20 hours. However, I do feel the photo restrictions are necessary, but does it have to be such a small amount? One photo per 20 hrs. is pretty steep. I feel at least 2 photos per 24 hrs. would be sufficient.

As far as storage problems related to cost of upkeep of the site, maybe remove older images from the galleries after a certain period of time. Shortening the period of presentation in any certain gallery would also reduce the amount of storage available.

Just my thoughts...

I think the upload limit was placed in more for traffic purposes than storage purposes, although it benifits both.

Janzalon- if you want two uploads a day, donate to the site and you will become a Cadre member, which are allowed two uploads a day. Cost is $3 a month for a Cadre membership.

Fair enough. But if storage isn't a problem, then why the low limit? If you say traffic, what does the amount of people visiting the site have to do with the amount you are allowed to upload? As it was stated before, not all people visit the site to upload. Some visit for wallpapers or to comment on others works. I just curious...

traffic=the amount of images uploaded per day
most of the regular users try and be fair and check out/comment/rate most of the images so this makes a big difference for them. as for you, if there are less new images, your new upload is more likely to be viewed, no?

07/27/04 7:38 PM GMT
Fair play. I see now why the upload limit has dropped. I just wasn't sure why it dropped to only one a day. However, if one upload a day makes Caedes a better site, then so be it.

PS: I was under the impression traffic referred to the number of visitors to a site, not images uploaded. This is where I was unclear.

Cheers to all

Very true, Mike, but it will be difficult to catch up after a long break. Hopefully I will be in the Cadre by the time I get back :-) The change has made me think twice before uploading images so I could get the best ones on first, but now I wonder if I should put them up at all. I am thinking of taking my poorer images off, but I figure the server will do it for me when they get to the end of the New Images gallery.

It's difficult to know at the moment... due to the recent change in c-index calculation I'm not even sure what a "good" rating is at the moment. There isn't really any standard time to wait as it depends how many votes you get and how quickly. Personally I delete images after about two weeks if they are at the bottom of my personal gallery list, but then I have alot more images than a new member would. If you only have a few images in your personal gallery I probably wouldn't let it worry me too much.

I try to keep all it over 50 c-index with the new rules, lately I've been wanting to delete all 50s, I dont have too many, and keep my gallery 60s and higher with the exception of tutorials. But I'm not sure what a 50-60 would have been in the last formula so I dont have a good idea of how good these images are.

My highest is 73, is that a half decent photo? I will be gone for a long stretch, so I don't know what will happen to my photos regarding their C-index and their existence. I hope the pictures I take during that time will recieve higher marks when I eventually get them up. In the mean time it wouldn't bother me at all if someone commented on the poem I posted a while back in the poetry discussion board. No one as of yet has commented, and I am feeling quite rejected. :-)

I support the new uploading rules big time, I would almost think this could even be less, let's say 1 every 40 hours. For me it is hard te believe that anyone would make a top photo every day, 365 days a year. Even if this is the fact, to chose between top photos must be a very nice feeling! Besides that... the more pictures are uploaded a day, the less time people will spend watching an commenting the image you just uploaded (as said already). So if you would upload two images a day, you would actually not only contribute in the fact that other new photos will be pushed away, but also your own. I totally support this.

My only issue with the new upload limit is that it still states on the website right here that memebers of the Caedes Cadre have an upload limit of 4 images per day. That may cause a few ruffled feathers if a person donates to the site with that expectation and then finds their limit is actually 2.
