Change the System

If caedes is serious about comments by users on new postings and the c-index, the present method has to be changed. I have suggested this before but no harm in trying again: Every user must vote on 10 posts and also comment on three or four before posting her/his own. Comments on postings of unknown authors are more likely to be impartial. I have noticed that even new-comers have quickly learned to join such groups of friends and now comment only on contributions of their "new friends". With the c-index it is the same problem. Friends have already seen the new posting of a friend and when they eventually get it in the voting booth they may not be so impartial.

Raj, you and I both know this topic has been put forth before. By you, by me, by countless others. There have been a wide range in reactions, from the very positive to the very negative, although thankfully, the latter is far fewer.

"If caedes is serious about comments by users on new postings and the c-index, the present method has to be changed."

Yes, *caedes owns this site. He and a group of people run it. But honestly, we are the site. If the mebership doesn't act the way they're supposed to, the rules could change, and very little else. I got pissed off, and left. The same things that irked me before haven't changed. People are people. By and large, people are selfish. The only variables are how much, and in what ways this selfishness manifests itself.

Some stubbornly refuse to follow site guidelines for what to post here, and what not to. Some speak (write) to others in ways they'd never dream of offline. Some will post threads or answer them incessantly, even though their concerns have been repeatedly addressed. I could go on, but I'm sure you get it.

The answer? It isn't about how (or what)people are told, or made to do things. It's how they choose to do them. Until people change how and what they do, there isn't much use in getting bent over it. I had to find out the hard way. Hopefully, you or someone else can learn from that, and not follow in my footsteps.

I can only imagine the quick two word comments (Looks Great!) that would be generated by requiring a member to comment in this manner. I think the current system is working great...it just needs to be used in the way it was intended. Hence, this ask for input on my art forum!

I treat this site as a place to make friends, exchange chats with people I have met on here and get some comments on my work.
To be honest I don't give a stuff about the Cindex..I like my work and others seem to.
I learn from comments from people and can ask questions...I ignore any idiots I come across..which are rare.

If you want serious voting and serious comments on ever image, I'm sure there are other sites that concentrate on it more.

But as has been said..rules are nothing if people do not follow them. Systems are nothing if you cannot make people follow the system.
And you can't, generally.

"You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink." Too true. :-).

I think people will vote low on every site using any system, unless it's a picture that really knocks their socks off for some reason.

Though I got a little confused the other day when I voted for something and didn't remember it. That happen to anybody else? I think it was because I was voting for a bunch of images and was just sort of working through them. Normally I give them the fairest vote I can, like or no like, but this one time my thoughts strayed, and I looked back and thought "did I vote for that tree? Really? What did I give it?" and I absolutely couldn't remember. It could have been the first number that popped into my head - a 7, possibly, but I'm not sure. Remind me not to vote when I'm tired...
