Make sure you are saving in JPG format.

Make sure the dimensions aren't too larger (1600 x 1200 should be as large as you would need for normal purposes).

If you still can't get the file size down, see if you can use a "save for web" function or similar to save it.

Damned 8 MP cams... ;-)
When shooting, you could choose a medium size images, so you didn't need to reduce before uploading on caedes.net

Well ... since we are on the subject ... what is the file size limitation for uploading?

And playing a hunch here, I am thinking that perhaps Amy is trying to upload a file that has an extension other than .jpg, .png or .tiff.

Such as .psd, if it was worked in Photoshop or perhaps some other image editing program/software.

Amy? Can you tell us ... by right-clicking on your image and then selecting/left-clicking "Properties" (you will see "Properties" listed at the bottom of that 'action' menu that includes "Preview" "Print" "Edit" "Copy" "Rename" and so forth) ... what the "Size" of the file is, as reported there?

As well, the "Type of File" located at the top of the Properties window when it opens.

That should help us help you ... er, betterer. :oP

Just kidding a bit.

Max. size is 3000x3000 pixels in jpg or png format. I think that the tiff format is not supported.

Oh, ok ... should have been more specific Pierre ... although reiterating that information for Amy is good ... I literally meant in terms of Kb's ... Mb's.

I have tried in the past to upload a large png file ... and was not successful as the 'server timed out'. The file size at that time might have been in or around 10 Mbs. Had to resize it before I met with upload success.

However, in that instance I don't think the error message I got was what Amy is reporting above ... as in, 'too large'. It was a server and internet connectivity issue.

Let's go to the extremes to illustrate the point(s) ... would I be able to upload a one gigabyte image file?

Don't think so ... so, then ... the question remains ... how big?

If I remember correctly the maximum file size you can upload is 5MB, although I can't remember where I got that figure from. I'll see if I can track down some proof.

Re: Maximum file size for uploading.

Recalled this other discussion thread by Phil ... here. 10MB is bantered about.

Been a bit since I took a closer look at the actual 'Upload Image' page ... no information there?

Well, I did manage to track down a comment from Caedes in this thread:

You shouldn't owrry about the file size of the image when you upload it to caedes.net. When we get your uploaded image we first save it as a JPG with a standard compression factor. This way we can make sure that all images are of a uniform compression quality and don't take up too much storage space. Tis also means that you should upload the image in a lossless format (like PNG) in order to avoid image degradation due to double compression.

So it seems (if I understood the above correctly) that there isn't a set limit regarding file sizes. Of course it might very well happen that the server times out if you try to upload a very large file... so doing so is only recommended for people with very fast connections. (T1 anyone?)

I'll ask that you please not quote comments by me that have so many typos. =)

I just checked the upload code, and there is no hard limit placed on upload image filesize, only on pixel dimensions (3000x3000).

Apparently there is a limit to the size of a PNG extension file when uploading to Caedes. Even though it is 3000 X 3000 pixels or smaller, it still may not upload. I tried umpteen times to upload a 3000 X 1984 pixels, PNG file that was 10.7 MB and it would not upload successfully. I reduced the size of the file to 2800 X 1852 pixels for a size of 9.44 MB and it uploaded successfully, so maybe 10 MB is a cutoff size for PNG extension file uploads. ???
