Hey, I am not sure about how to vote correctly. E.g. often I have to vote on fractals or computer generated stuff. But I cannot say that I have ever seen a fractal which is a real fotography form me (ok, you are right, it's hard to define what a real fotography is, may be we can agree on that it has to do with the real world - ok again, what's the real world...). So I have a problem to define my (personal) guidelines to assess it. Conventional rules (sharpness, naturality, ...) are not applieable for myself. And even if I only assess whether the fractal appeals to me I have the problem that usually it does not.
In my opinion it would be fair enabling members to select "interest groups" or for my sake to unsubscribe from some. Images a specific reviewer has to vote on would come only from groups this reviewer is subscribed to. What do you think?

I hope it's clear what my problem is, hopefully there are some clarifying answers or hints.

i got along with that point.
when i started here on caedes i had the same 'problem'.
but the more you see fractals regularly the more you get common with them.
i give higher points on fractals that have no disturbing colors or color combinations.
also those non symmetrical fractals are more to my taste...

the voting system doubtfully will be changed, those efforts are senseless ;o)

Hi Chris... as a fractalist, you've piqued my curiosity.It's rare to get an honest look inside the head of a non fractalist & discuss what makes or breaks a fractal in the booth.

Just what are disturbing colors or combinations to you ? Non harmonious ones ? Untraditional combinations ? I'm not attacking... I'm honestly curious.

Fractals are not photography. Fractals are digital art. You may occasionally find a fractal that looks like it might have been a macro photo, but such fractals are rare. Fractals are generally NOT going to look realistic because they are abstract art, and they are digital art as well.

It's fine if photographs appeal to you more. Everyone likes different things. Some photos appeal to me more than some fractals, but I like them both in general. Just keep in mind that you really shouldn't expect a fractal to look like a photo because it's not.

You will find some good fractals and some bad ones, as you would with all other types of art. It's abstract digital art, so what appeals to one person may not appeal to another. I try to make my art appeal to the masses. That's what this site is for, after all.

As a fractal artist, I can tell that a fractal is of good quality if the rendering quality was high, if the image is eye-pleasing by both design and color, and if the image has the "wow" factor to it that sets it apart from a bunch of other fractals that can be found on the internet. Wow factor varies from person to person, but it generally is what distinguishes a 10 from a 9. Hope this helps.

I made an Apophysis tutorial recently, you might want to try playing around with it. You can also try looking in the permanent abstract galleries; the best fractals on the site are there.

not to speak for the original poster, but, some people only exist in reality .. they cannot make the jump to "fanciful', make-believe, color-for-color's sake .. they are too set in their view ... you never really convert them to the other side, they adapt only partially

there is nothing wrong with Mother Nature, of course .. but there is also nothing wrong with letting go of it for 'a bit'

this has been at the crux of all of these "I can't relate" posts ... it would be interesting to follow them around in a Museum of Modern Art .. do they spend a lot of time at the window?

I'm sure you can see the colours and the design that is 2 things that EVERYONE can decide on.. Do you like the colours?... Do you like the design? these are NOT hard to figure out and not hard to vote on.. Not everyone does photography or can draw/paint, but I'm sure they can tell whether they like the look of something.. I'm sorry but I just find all this "I can't vote" because I don't know what i'm looking at or how they make it a weak excuse.. thats just my opinion..

I think we should start handing out how to vote cards.

Maybe it should be in the FAQ section...

I think someone should be assigned (a mod) to welcome the newbies and put links to FAQ, COC, How to vote and what is a snapshot that way they will see it as soon as they become members.. =) or the boss can make it an automatic thing for when new members register it comes up on their pages.. just a thought..

It was really my fault. I have not recognized that caedes is not only a platfrom for fotography...
From the electronic-art point of view fractals are fully acceptable.
Also I have to apologize for asking an often asked question again solely because I have not used the search function.

Well, we like to think that fractals are acceptable from more than an electronic art point of view....we like to think of them as & us, as fully acceptable.

Actually if you want to be very picky.. this is a wallpaper site and MOST of the fractals ARE more wallpaper than photos..

*Please note.. I do NOT mean that is how the site works or am I putting down photography.. I was just making a point that it is a wallpaper site.. to me Photographs make good wallpaper too, and I have a few that I have had as desktop..

I think a FAQ section on how to vote on different things would be a great idea. Perhaps the site could be set up so that all new members automatically get PM'ed with the link upon registration. :)
